Doubleheader Split on Day 2 Earns the Lakers a Series Win Against Southeastern Illinois College

Iowa Lakes took on Southeastern Illinois College on Day 2 of the four game series but this time at a different location. Just like games 1 and 2 were played at a neutral site located at Southern Illinois-Carbondale, games 3 and 4 were held at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. The Lakers managed a a doubleheader split on day 2 against Southeastern Illinois College with the Lakers falling in game 1, 7-4 and winning game 2, 7-4. 

In game 1, Iowa Lakes struggled early offensively and were unable to score runs off of Southeastern Illinois pitching until the top of the seventh inning when they put up 4 runs on six hits. Ashtin Moxey (Jacksonville, Florida) led off the inning with a single, followed by an RBI double from Chad Hinkle (Rosemount, Minnesota) and a single by Spencer Keane (Palm Springs, California) which would advance Hinkle to third. Spenser Larson (Eden Praire, Minneosta) would bring home 2 runs, two batters later with a double and would score on a RBI single from Mallard Holland (Tampa, Florida) in the following at bat. Tavan Shahidi (Ames, Iowa) would also single in the top of the seventh but the Lakers were unable to complete the come back as the seven run deficit would be to much to overcome.

Sophomore pitcher, Zach Meyer (Omaha, Nebraska) got his second start of the year in game 1. Meyer would give up 5 runs, only 1 earned, in 2 1/3 innings pitched. Freshman pitcher, Mitchell Hoover (Brandon Valley, South Dakota), would relieve Meyer in the third inning and finish the game by going 3 2/3 innings and giving up just 2 runs on 3 hits with only 1 run being earned and striking out six batters. 

In game 2, the Laker offense scored early in the first inning with a Larson, 1-out double which was followed up by a Shahidi RBI single to give the Lakers a quick 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Jayden Adrians ( Green Bay, Wisconsin) would single, Moxey would walk to put runners at first and second with Hinkle coming to the plate. Hinkle would double to right center field to bring 2 more runs as part of his three hit day, including two of three hits being extra base hits. After the first inning, the Lakers would have control of the game 4-0. Freshman pitcher, Tyler Shafer (Nevada, Iowa) started the game by pitching two scoreless innings and only letting on one base runner by a walk. In the top half of the third, the Laker offense would score two more runs with a lead off walk from Holland. He would a steal second base and advancet to third base on a wild ptich. With a runner on third, Shahidi would hit a sacrifice fly ball down the right field line to bring home Holland to bring the lead to 5-0. With one out in the inning, Adrians would single and two batters later, Hinkle would continue his hot streak with an RBI triple to right center to increase the lead to 6-0 after 2 1/2 innings. Southeastern Illinois would get back two runs on a couple of hits in their half of the third inning but would be unable to do any more damage in the third as Shafer would be done for the day with three innings of work and only giving up the 2 earned runs. With the score now 6-2, both offenses would add on runs later in the game with Iowa Lakes scoring one more run in the top of fourth inning and Southeastern Illinois adding two runs in the fifth, making the score 7-4, heading into the sixth. Freshman pitcher Carl Renz (Pewaukee, Wisconsin) would come into the game in the fourth inning and striking out five of the six outs that he would record. Dillon Van Oosbree (Emmetsburg, Iowa), a sophomore, would come in to close the door by pitching the final two innings of game and getting the save. Van Oosbree would strike out two while giving up no runs and no hits during his outing.

Iowa Lakes improved their overall record to 5-3 with the series win over Southeastern Illinois College and will take on Iowa Western, who is 2-2 after splitting their first series of the year with Crowder College, in a four game series next weekend, February 3rd and 4th. Game 1 and Game 2 will start at 1 pm and 3 pm respectively on Saturday along with Game 3 and Game 4 starting 12 pm and 2pm on Sunday.
