Lakers Drop Two Against Iowa Western on Day Two of the Series

Iowa Lakes took on Iowa Western Community College in a doubleheader, Sunday, to wrap up the four series against the Reivers. The Lakers would drop both games of the doubleheader by the final scores of 9-4 in game 1 and 10-0 in game 2.

In game 1, the Iowa Lakes pitching staff would be tested early and often by the Reiver hitters with sophomore pitcher Zach Meyer (Omaha, Nebraska) taking the baseball for his third start of year. With the Reivers having a 1-0 lead after the first inning, the Lakers would rally to tie the game up at 1 with a lead off double by freshman first baseman, Jayden Adrians (Green Bay, Wisconsin). That hit would be followed up by a two-out RBI single by freshman Jarrod Corona (Tucson, Arizona). Iowa Western would answer that run with a couple of their own, making it 4-1 after the second inning. Meyer would end up going 2 2/3 innings while giving up 6 runs on 4 hits while striking out 2 hitters. With the score 6-1 entering the top half of the fourth inning, the Lakers offense would find some life with 1-out double by Adrians and a 2-out single by Chad Hinkle (Rosemount, Minnesota) to drive in Adrians from second base. Corona would again shine with two-outs by delivering a single to left center field to bring Hinkle home and make it 6-3. The Lakers would push the score to 6-4 with a another two-out single from Spencer Keane (Palm Springs, California). That would be all the Lakers would get across as the Reivers would add on 2 more runs in bottom of the fourth and 1 run in the fifth to make it 9-4 which would end up being the final score.

In game 2, the Lakers would struggle to find offense as the the Reiver pitching staff would hold the Laker lineup scoreless through 5 innings of play. Freshman pitcher, Carl Renz (Pewaukee, Wisconsin) would get the nod to start game 4 of the series and would dominate early in the first innings by throwing 2 scoreless innings and striking out 3 batters. Renz would run into some trouble however in the third inning when the Reiver lineup would put up 4 runs against him which put an end to the outing. Renz finished with 2 2/3 innings pitched while giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and striking out 3 batters. Iowa Western would add more runs later in the game by scoring 3 runs in the fourth and 3 runs in the fifth to bring the final score to 10-0 in favor of Iowa Western.

Some of the highlights from day two of the series against Iowa Western Community was Adrians two hit game in game 1 which included a pair of doubles. Freshman pitcher Mitchell Hoover (Brandon Valley, South Dakota) would throw well in game 1 againt the Reivers when he threw 1 1/3 and only giving up the one hit while striking out 4 batters.

Iowa Lakes is now 5-7 with their next series taking place on the road in Clarinda, Iowa against Southwestern Community College who is 1-8 on the young season. Follow Iowa Lakes baseball, @Lakerbaseball, for live updates and links for future games.
