Lakers Fall to DMACC In Series Opener

Iowa Lakes headed to Boone, Iowa Friday afternoon to take on Des Moines Area Community College to start the second conference series of the year. The Lakers would lose a tough one in game 1 of the series, 6-5, on a walk-off hit in the bottom seventh inning. The Lakers would also fall in game 2 by a final score of 13-7.

Game 1 would start out in favor of the Bears when they would jump out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Lakers offense, however, would not be held down for long. The the rally would start in the top of the second inning with a 1-out double by Chad Hinkle (Rosemount, Minnesota) which was then followed by a Jayden Adrians (Green Bay, Wisconsin) hit by pitch to put runners at first and second base with only one out in the inning. Sophomore outfielder, Dillon Van Oosbree (Emmetsburg, Iowa) would come up big with a 2-run double to center field to drive home Hinkle and Adrians and get the Lakers on the scoreboard. Spenser Larson (Eden Praire, Minnesota) would also contribute in the second inning with a 2-out, RBI single to bring home Van Oosbree to bring the bring the score to 3-3 after two innings of play. Freshman pitcher, Mitchell Hoover (Brandon Valley, South Dakota) would dominate from there as he would shut the Bears lineup from the second inning on. Hoover would finish with 6 innings pitched with only the 3 runs given up, 2 earned, on 8 hits and striking out five. The Lakers would take the lead in the top of the sixth thanks in large part to solo home run for Ashtin Moxey (Jacksonville, Florida) to push the lead to 4-3 after six. The offense would add an insurance run in the seventh inning as well when BJ Johnson (Tallahassee, Florida) would reach base on a hit by pitch and take second base with a stolen base. He would reach third on a wild pitch and score on a Larson sacrifice fly to deep center, giving the Lakers the 5-3 advantage heading to the bottom of the seventh. Freshman pitcher, Carl Renz (Pewaukee, Wisconsin) would come on to close the game out but was touched up by the Bears lineup for three runs and give DMACC the win 6-5.

Game 2 would start off very similar to game 1 as DMACC would get on the board early and take a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Lakers would again answer the call offensively with the help of another solo home run by Adrians to left-center, the first of his college career. The Bears would have an answer of their own by scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the second inning with the help of three extra base hits. With score being 7-1 after two, the Lakers offense would try and spark a rally in the third by putting up 3-run inning which was highlighted by Tavan Shahidi (Ames, Iowa) RBI double to centerfield. DMACC would add one run in the fourth to increase the lead to 8-4 before heading into the sixth inning would put some distance between themselve and Lakers by adding on 3 more runs and pushing the lead even further to 11-4. The Lakers would continue to grind it out and add 2 runs in the seventh which was provided by a Hinkle 1-out, 2-run single to right field. Both teams would trade runs back and forth over the course of the next two innings with DMACC taking game 2 by a final score of 13-7.
