Lakers Split Doubleheader with Century

Iowa Lakes would hit the road on Tuesday afternoon to make a trip up to White Bear Lake, Minnesota to take on Century College in a doubleheader that would see plenty of offense to go around as the Lakers offense would go on to hit five homeruns on the day. The Lakers went on to split the doubleheader with Century College however with Iowa Lakes winning game one 11-10 and falling in game two 10-8.

The Lakers would get off to a good start in the first inning as Chad Hinkle (Rosemount, Minnesota) would get things started with a leadoff single to centerfield. He would advance to second on walk to Mallard Holland (Tampa, Florida) and come around to score on a Tavan Shahidi (Ames, Iowa) single to give the Lakers the advantage on the scoreboard early 1-0. The Ducks would have an answer of their own in the bottom of the first inning as they would score two off of Kyle Greenlee (Hastings, Minnesota) would start on the mound in game one. The Ducks would increase their lead in the third inning as they would they string together an RBI single, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI ground to push the lead to 5-1 after three innings worth of play. The Lakers offense would break on the long ball in the top of the fourth inning as Spenser Larson (Eden Praire, Minnesota) would lead the inning off with a solo homerun to left field to cut the deficit to 5-2. Luis Cintron (Yabuccoa, Puerto Rico) would draw a walk in the next at bat and advance on to second on a groundout by Noah Catron (Praire City, Iowa). With a runner on second, Jarrod Corona (Tucson, Arizona) would come up with a big RBI single to bring home Cintron and shrink the lead to 5-3. Hinkle would single to right field two batters latter to bring Holland to plate. Holland, with two on and two out, would blast a home run to left field to give the Lakers the lead at 6-5. The lead for Iowa Lakes would short lived as the Ducks would put together a two run inning for themselve to reclaim the lead 7-6. As we headed to the top of the fifth inning, the Lakers bats would continue to stay hot as Cintron would drive a double into the left-center field gap to bring home Larson who had walked in the previous at bat to tie up the game at 7-7. Corona would reach first on  fielder choice and advance to second on a hit by pitch for Amir Moten-Thompson (Milwaukee, Wisconsin). Hinkle would single in the next at bat to drive home Corona and give the Lakers the lead with the score now being 8-7. Holland again would come up with two runners on and two outs and would see the same result as the previous at bat with a blast to left field for another three run homerun to put the Lakers up 11-7 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Century would end up scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth and one run in the bottom of the seventh but thanks to a big double play in the seventh inning, the rally died out and the Lakers would take game one by a final score of 11-10.

Game two would start out very similar to game one as the Lakers would jump on the score board early with a run in the top of the first inning as Dillon Van Oosbree (Emmetsburg, Iowa) would drive home Holland from second base would had walked and stole second base to give Iowa Lakes the 1-0 advantage early on. The Ducks offense would continue to hit well as they would answer in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own and two more runs in the bottom of the second as well to give them the lead at 4-1 heading to the tird inning. Van Oosbree would once again find himself in a situation to drive home Holland from second and would come up clutch again as he would drive a single to left field cut the lead to down to 4-2 in favor of the Ducks. The Century offense would score three runs in the bottom of the third to push their lead to 7-2 but not to be out done by the top of the Laker lineup as Spencer Keane (Palm Springs, California) would start the two out rally with a single and would go on to steal second base. Holland would bring home keane on an RBI double down the left field line and would score shortly after by a Shahidi RBI double to bring the score to 7-4. The Lakers would continue to chip away at the lead in the fifth inning as Larson would lead the inning off with a solo home run to leftfield to make a two run ball game at 7-5. With the Lakers riding momentum after the homerun, the Ducks would respond with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one run in the sixth to push the lead to 10-5 with one last half inning to rally for the Lakers. With one out in the top of the seventh inning, Larson would continue his hot bat with his third home run of the day with this one going to the opposite field and giving the Lakers life with the score now being 10-6. Both Hinkle and Cintron would both score later in the inning by the rally would be cut short as the the Ducks would make a fine defensive play to throw Wayde Beckford (Nassua, Bahamas) out at home plate to end the threat of a come back. The Lakers would fall in game two 10-8.
