Lakers Split Season Opening Doubleheader With Red Devils

The Iowa Lakes Lakers traveled to Iola, Kansas to take on the Allen County Red Devils. In game one the Red Devils struck first taking advantage of Laker mistakes. Dean Bedell (Treynor,Iowa) led the second inning off with a walk and advanced to second with a Andrew Eskens (Lincoln, Nebraska) sac bunt. Alex Pavon (Bellevue, Nebraska) would reach on a error to move Bedell to third base and Trey Jacobson (Estherville, Iowa) would reach on a walk to load the bases for Beau Sackett (Malcolm, Nebraska). He would answer with a single past a diving shortstop to score Bedell and Pavon to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. Iowa Lakes would tack on two more runs in the third inning. Mark Thornhill (Tallahassee, Florida) would get the inning going with a single through the left side, followed by a Jalen Jones (Indianapolis, Indiana) double to right field which would advance Thornhill to third. Thornhill and Jones would both score on a Pavon fielders choice and a Jacobson infield single to make it 4-1 Lakers going into the bottom of the 3rd inning. Allen County would score 7 unanswered runs over the next 3 innings against 3 separate Laker pitchers to give them a win in game one 8-4. 

 

Beau Sackett would lead the second game off launching a ball over the left field wall to give Iowa Lakes an early 1-0 lead. The Red Devils would respond with two unearned runs of their own to take the lead 2-1. The Lakers would counter in the third inning scoring two runs. Jacobson would lead the inning off with a walk and Austen Daliet (New Orleans, Louisiana) would reach first on an error. Thornhill and Jones would both reach on walks scoring Jacobson from third. Austen Daliet would score from third on a passed ball to give Iowa Lakes a 3-2 lead heading into the fourth inning. Allen County would answer with a solo home run to make it 3-3 through 3. The Lakers would explode for seven runs in the fourth to break the game open. The scoring started when Beck Anshutz (Des Moines, Iowa) walked followed by Jacobson and Trevor Bormann (Algona, Iowa) walks to load the bases for Daliet who would lace a ball to left field to tack onto the lead. Ryan Mclean (Shelburne, Ontario) would reach on base with a walk as well as Jones to score another run for the Lakers. Bedell would come up and single to center field to add onto the scoring for Iowa Lakes. The Lakers offense would take advantage of Red Devils errors and walks to take a 10-3 lead. Allen County would score 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 10-5. Iowa Lakes would score four more runs in the sixth and seventh. In the sixth, Jones would double to right and advance to third on a sac fly. He would eventually score on a throwing error to make it 11-5 Iowa Lakes. In the seventh the Laker offense would add some insurance. Daliet and Mclean would both walk to reach base, Thornhill would come up and tattoo a ball to the left field corner to score Daliet amd advance Mclean to third. Jones would follow and single to center to score both Mclean and Thornhill to give Iowa Lakes the 14-5 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. Arturo Gil (San Luis, Arizona) would shut the door the final 3 innings, going 3 scoreless, striking out five. 

 

Jacob Buffington (Bogart, Georgia)  would get the start in game two going four innings striking out seven batters and only giving up one earned run
