Lakers Baseball Takes One From Southeastern Illinois College

Marion, IL — The Iowa Lakes Baseball team split against Southeastern Illinois on Wednesday evening. 

GAME ONE: (Lakers 4, Southeastern 3)

Southeastern lead the first inning with a base hit single by Mason White (#41) followed by Kody Putnam (#1) hitting a monster home run to put Southeastern on top with an early lead of 2-0.  

Through 8-innings, starting pitcher Jacob Gilbert (Wasilla, AK/Wasilla High School) only allowing three runs, with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks.

With the Lakers down 3-0 going into the top of the 7th inning, with bases loaded, freshman Ben Bach (Bloomington, MN/Bloomington Jefferson High School) drove a ball down the left field line for a base clearing double. With the game now tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the 7th, Gilbert allowed his defense to work, and stranding two Southeastern baserunners at first and third to end the inning.

For the Lakers in the top of the 8th inning, freshman Delvis Claudio (Vega Alta, PR/Puerto Rico Baseball Academy) started with a base hit single to left field, followed by a bunt to move the runner over to second by sophomore Dean Bedell. Which game sophomore Jimmy Mapakou (Vaureal, Ile-de, FR/Baseball Toulouse Academy) the opportunity to drive in the Claudio with a double hammered into the left center gap (4-3 Lakers). 

Starting in the bottom of the 8th, the Lakers and Jacob Gilbert started with a fly out to shortstop sophomore Austen Daliet (New Orleans, LA/De La Salle High School) for the first out of the inning. Followed by a hard ground ball that was fielded by Gilbert for the second. With Southeastern's Logan Verble (#34) hitting a single the centerfield, did not stop Gilbert from getting a fly ball by Cole Steibel (#23), that was caught by 1st baseman sophomore Noah Murphy-Sealy (Aurora, ON/Bill Crothers Secondary School) to clinch the Lakers victory 4-3.

This is Coach Danny Acosta's first win as a Head Coach at the Collegiate level.

GAME TWO: (Southeastern 8, Lakers 2)

Southeastern putting a 3 spot on Iowa Lakes early in the third.

Starting pitcher, Andrew Eskens (Lincoln, NE/Pius X High School), started the game off with going through the first two innings, only allowing two runs for Southeastern.

It wasn't until the bottom of the 3rd when Southeastern Putman (#1) hit a two RBI triple, putting Southeastern up 5-0.

With the Lakers scoring one in the top of the 6th inning by freshman Ben Bach, the game now 5-1. The Lakers brought in sophomore Chase Dornfeld (Appleton, WI/Appleton West High School) who gave up three unearned runs to start the inning, after doing which Lakers head coach Danny Acosta brought in freshman Jack Hested (Fairmont, MN/Fairmont High School) to get through the end of the 6th. Southeastern was now up 8-1 going into the top of the 7th.

Starting the top of the 7th inning, sophomore outfielder Jimmy Mapakou (Vaureal, Ile-de, FR/Baseball Toulouse Academy) advanced to first on a leadoff walk, and later scoring off of a double by freshman Joey Winters (Rosemount, MN/Henry Sibley High School).

The Lakers had difficulty on the offensive side, only being able to score one in the top of the 6th and one in the top of the 7th. Making the final score 8-2 Southeastern through 7-innings.

NEXT UP: Iowa Lakes plays a two-game series against Dakota County Technical College on March 2nd, at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, MN. Game one will begin at 12:00pm and 2:30pm.
