Lakers take series 2-1 over Spartans

 

GAME ONE: (Lakers 9, Spartans 8)

Iowa Lakes took the lead late in the game in a 9-8 victory over Southwestern on Sunday. The game was tied at six with the Lakers batting in the top of the ninth when Delvis Claudio hit a solo homer.

The base paths were crowded in this high-scoring game. The Lakers collected 13 hits and the Spartans had seven. Southwestern fired up the offense in the first inning, when Phillips singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, The Spartans tied things up at six. Ciafillo was hit by a pitch, driving in a run. Iowa Lakes put up four runs in the sixth inning. Peter Marquez and Akxel Soto powered the big inning with RBIs.

The Spartans scored three runs in the sixth inning. Southwestern offense in the inning was led by Thompson, Bargs, and Bello, who each had RBIs in the inning.

Sean Gamble took the win for Iowa Lakes. The righthander lasted one and two-thirds innings, allowing one hit and two runs while striking out two.  Kelvin Castro and Travis J Galleberg entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Richards took the loss for the Spartans. The bulldog lasted five innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out three.

The Lakers tallied three home runs on the day. Claudio had a long ball in the ninth inning. Marquez went yard in the sixth inning. Caden White went deep in the eighth inning. Iowa Lakes racked up 13 hits.  Soto, Luis Ramos, and Joan Benavidez all managed multiple hits for Iowa Lakes Community College.  Soto led Iowa Lakes Community College with three hits in five at bats.

Figveroa went 2-for-5 at the plate to lead Southwestern in hits.

 

The Lakers travel to Briar Cliff University for a single nine-inning game Monday April 4th.
