Lakers split with Tigers

GAME ONE: (Lakers 10, Tigers 7)

Both offenses were strong in Iowa Lakes 10-7 victory over Marshalltown.

In the first inning, the Lakers got their offense started when Joey Winters singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run.

After the Tigers scored one run in the top of the fifth, the Lakers answered with one of their own. Marshalltown scored when an error scored one run. Iowa Lakes then answered when Santiago Gonzalez's sac fly scored one run.

Iowa Lakes pulled away for good with five runs in the third inning. In the third Delvis Claudio singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run, Matt Torresan's sac fly scored one run for the Lakers, Caden White singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run, and Joan Benavidez homered on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs.

Bryan Mojica took the win for Iowa Lakes. The pitcher went six innings, allowing seven runs on 11 hits and striking out three. Cade Witzke threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Witzke recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Iowa Lakes.

Allen took the loss for Marshalltown. Allen lasted three innings, allowing ten hits and eight runs while striking out five and walking one.

Iowa Lakes launched one home run on the day. Benavidez had a homer in the third inning.

The Lakers totaled 15 hits. Torresan, Ben Bach, Winters, Juan Martinez, Tyler Hoffman, and White each racked up multiple hits for Iowa Lakes.  White, Hoffman, Martinez, Winters, Bach, and Torresan each collected two hits to lead Iowa Lakes.

Marshalltown had 11 hits in the game. Slack, Juhlin, and Moreno all managed multiple hits for the Tigers. Slack led Marshalltown Community College with three hits in five at bats.

GAME TWO: (Tigers 24, Lakers 5)

Iowa Lakes watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 24-5 loss to Marshalltown. The Tigers scored on a double by Pell in the first inning, a home run by Nowak in the second inning, a double by Slack in the second inning, and a home run by Moreno in the second inning.

Iowa Lakes struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Marshalltown, giving up 24 runs.

The Tigers got on the board in the first inning. Marshalltown scored one run when Pell doubled.

Iowa Lakes scored three runs in the seventh inning. Teagan Ziems, Rafael Perez, and Caden White all drove in runs in the frame.

The Tigers scored seven runs in the fourth inning. Marshalltown batters contributing to the big inning included Slack, Durman, Pell, Nowak, Ralston, and Juhlin, who all drove in runs.

Tyrpa was credited with the victory for Marshalltown. The fireballer went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out nine and walking one.

Kellen Cameron took the loss for the Lakers. The righty surrendered nine runs on eight hits over two innings, striking out two and walking one.

Iowa Lakes smacked one home run on the day. Ziems had a dinger in the seventh inning.

Perez led the Lakers with two hits in two at bats.

Marshalltown racked up 16 hits on the day. Slack, Durman, Ralston, Pell, Nowak, and Moreno each had multiple hits for the Tigers. Slack went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead the Tigers in hits. The Tigers was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Juhlin had the most chances in the field with ten.

 

The Lakers finish their weekend series against the Tigers in Marshalltown, IA on Sunday, May 1st. Gametimes are set for 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM CST.
