LAKER VOLLEYBALL SEASON PREVIEW
Iowa Lakes head volleyball coach Hunter Porter begins her second season with the Lakers. Porter has quickly put her stamp on the program bringing in a strong freshmen class. This year the Lakers take the court with a new look with 13 first-year students and only 2 returning sophomores.
Returning this season are Brittany Butler and Katie Kracht who will be team leaders for the 2018 volleyball season.
"As the season approaches I am very excited to see what this group can do," Porter said. "Our talent level is up from last year, and our numbers are up, and so is our athleticism."
One strength for the Lakers this year will be their defense. This will include Katie Kracht, Faith Marroquin, Micaela Cornilous, Mary Kelly, Evonne Tomlin and Stephanie Batalla. Porter will be looking for these defensive specialists to be strong with quick feet.
"All of our DS's do a great job at picking up hard driven balls. They have a relentless mindset and are not afraid to battle any hitter that swings their way," commented Porter.
Butler, the returning sophomore setter will lead the offense. Porter is looking for an offense with a very quick tempo and continuing to work on setter-hitter connection. If they keep progressing how they have been over the past week, they will be in excellent shape in October. Also setting this season will be Gracie Castorena and Mary Kelly. Neither are setters primarily but have done an excellent job stepping in during preseason and running the offense.
At the net, there will be some pretty aggressive outsides: Janya Johnson, Hannah Seil, and Amber Walls. They all attack the ball with a heavy hand and are not afraid to challenge a block in front of them. As the season progresses, the team will be working to diversify their shot portfolio and continue to improve their already consistent serve receive.
Blocking Defensive will be led by Keyeria Tyeskie, Krishonna Jones, and Ariel Bozonie in the middle. All are very capable of setting a solo block and making a hitter work for a kill. They have improved significantly since day one on their timing with both blocking and hitting.
"As the season approaches, I am very excited to see what this group can do. We have an outstanding group, and I think we will be able to surprise some teams this season. I cannot wait to coach this team."
