The DMACC softball team pushed its winning streak to 14 games with doubleheader wins over Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) and Ellsworth Community College (ECC) March 28 and 31 at the DMACC softball diamond.
The Bears, ranked seventh in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), topped ILCC by scores of 8-0 and 24-2 and defeated ECC, 8-0 and 13-0.
The wins give DMACC a 28-3 record, a 4-0 mark in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) and a extends its winning streak to 14 games. The Bears have not lost since dropping a 10-2 decision to Neosho County Community College (NCCC) March 11 at Chanute, Kan. Nine of the 14 wins in the winning streak have come in games called after five innings because of the mercy rule and three of those wins were called after six innings because of the mercy rule.
Freshman Macee Reilling of Dallas Center doubled and drove in three runs to lead the Bears past ILCC in the opener on March 28. DMACC took a 1-0 lead in the third and put the game away with three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth.
Freshman Ella Husak of Polk City paced the Bears' 13-hit attack with three singles and freshman Erin Ades of Boone added a pair of singles. Extra base hits in addition to Reilling's double included doubles by sophomores Hilary Wilson of Solon and Josie McCuddin of Truro and freshman Jasey Anderson of Estherville added a triple and drove in two runs.
Freshman Kierra Jungers of Fonda improved to 13-0 with the win. She allowed three hits and struck out 12 batters.
Sophomore Breanna Caffery of Bettendorf belted two home runs and drove in six runs in DMACC's win in the second game. Ades had four hits, two doubles, a triple and a home run, and came away with five RBIs and freshman Mo Purdy of Des Moines homered and singled and collected four RBIs.
The Bears took an 11-0 lead in the first and pulled away with a run in the second, eight in the third and four in the fourth.
ILCC scored its two runs in the top of the fourth.
Wilson joined Caffery with three hits in the win and Husak, McCuddin, Purdy and freshman Baylor Gregory of Papillion, Neb., had two hits apiece. Extra-base hits included doubles from Reilling and McCuddin and a home run from Anderson.
Freshman Jacki Baas of Bondurant got her ninth win of the season against one loss behind a five-hitter. She allowed two runs, struck out three and walked one.
Four RBIs from Husak and three by Ades led the Bears to the win in the opener against ECC. Ades' two hits included a home run, DMACC's only extra-base hit in the game.
Caffery, Husak and Reilling also had two hits apiece in the win.
Jungers pitched the first four innings and stayed unbeaten at 14-0. She allowed one hit, struck out six and walked four. Freshman Brooklyn Baumgardner of Slater threw one inning, allowing one hit and striking out two batters.
Anderson hit a single, a double and a home run and drove in six runs in DMACC's win in the second game. The Bears all but put the game away with seven runs in the first and five in the second and they closed it out with a run in the fourth.
Caffery and freshman Bre Tigges of Urbandale had two hits apiece and extra-base hits included doubles from Wilson and sophomore Delaney Milanowski of Spring Green, Wis., a triple from Ades and a home run by Purdy.
Sophomore Macy Blomgren of Waukee ran her record to 4-0 with a three-hitter. She pitched three innings, striking out five and walking one. Sophomore Ellie Flanagan of Coggon pitched two innings and struck out two batters.
The DMACC softball team will face Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in a matchup of ranked teams April 3 at Cedar Rapids. The Eagles, ranked 12th in the NJCAA Division II poll, are 26-8 overall and 3-1 in the ICCAC. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for April 2 but has been moved to April 3.
