Laker Men Fall Short of Nationals

Laker Men traveled down to Gates Park Golf Course in Waterloo, Iowa, for the 54-hole North Central Regional District Championship. The very competitive field featured six teams that were ranked top-20 nationally. In order to qualify for nationals, the Lakers needed a top-3 finish as a team or top 3 individually (not including individuals of qualifying teams). After a rough start in the first round, the Lakers found themselves in 10th place as a team and 20 strokes behind third place. As they turned into the second round, the nerves started to fade, and they could play how they were capable. Unfortunately, the deficit from round 1 was too big to overcome. The Lakers posted rounds of 318, 299, and 309 to finish 8th in the region.

Christian Prambs led the way for the Lakers. He was 7 strokes from a chance to compete at nationals.

"We knew going into the tournament that we needed some special things to come together in order to have another national appearance. We showed both our inexperience and our potential in waves throughout the tournament. Janlo Zaayman was the only returning player from last year's national team. The grind of 54 holes crammed into 2 days was brand new for 4/5 of our players. I was proud of how they maintained short-term memory and continued to grind their way back," said Coach Myers. "There was a level of disappointment initially for coming up short, but I reminded our freshmen that our second round proved that we have the talent to compete in this region. We need to continue building confidence and consistency over the summer and next fall. I also want to thank Janlo Zaayman for his impact on our men's and women's programs. As the only sophomore, he had quite the challenge of leading the team and setting an example. He played a massive role in the growth our freshman made throughout the year and I have no doubts he will make an immediate impact on the next program he commits to. He will be tough to replace but I'm very excited about the talent we have coming in. There will be a lot of competition to make the varsity lineup! The program is headed in a great direction! I can't wait to see what next year has in store for us!"
