Strong Pitching Propels Lakers to Two Wins Over Hawkeye

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball earned a sweep over Hawkeye Community College. They took game one 15-2 in six innings and then fought back from behind to win game two 7-4. The Lakers are now 15-27 overall and 6-16 in conference.

GAME 1: 15 (ILCC), 2 (HCC) 6 innings

Myla Murphy got the offense going in game one with a one out single to the shortstop. She then advanced to second on a groundball up the middle off the bat of Taylor Larson. Katelyn Hamm then stepped up and delivered a double to left center to score Murphy and advance Larson to third.

Iowa Lakes added to their lead in the second, scoring five runs. Ally Davis singled and then advanced to second on a Hawkeye throwing error. Alexis Cullinane earned a single of her own to move Davis to third. A walk from Alayna Leighton loaded up the bases. Another Redtail error allowed Davis to score and give the Lakers a 2-0 lead with the bases still loaded. With one out, Larson then hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Leighton from third base. Katelyn Hamm then delivered her second double of the game, clearing the bases and putting the Lakers up 6-0. Hawkeye was able to get one run in their half of the inning on a double and a single.

Both offenses remained quiet until the fourth when the Lakers scored two. Murphy again singled before Larson drove a ball over the centerfield fence to make the score 8-1. The Redtails again countered with a run of their own on back-to-back doubles.

The Lakers broke things open in the sixth when Murphy singled up the middle. Larson then drew a walk and Hamm singled up the middle, scoring Murphy from second. Both Larson and Hamm were able to advance 60 feet on the throw to home, allowing Larson to score on Macy Alderson's single. With runners at second and third and two outs, Cullinane delivered a double to right, scoring two runners. Madison Goosmann entered the game and singled to advance Cullinane to third. This allowed Abby Burgess to take the first ball she saw and drive it over the fence to put the Lakers up 15-2.

Jolene Jordahl earned the win in the circle, allowing two earned runs in her six innings of work. This was done on six hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. Katelyn Hamm was 3-4 with four runs batted in, Alexis Cullinane and Myla Murphy were each 3-4 as well, while Taylor Larson and Macy Alderson added two hits of their own. The Lakers combined for seventeen hits in the game.

GAME 2: 7 (ILCC), 4 (HCC)

The Laker offense was pretty dormant in game two, allowing the Redtails to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. They scored three runs in the first inning on three hits, one walk, and one Laker error.

Iowa Lakes' offense came alive in the fifth inning. After two quick outs, Burgess doubled to get things started. Murphy then drew a four pitch walk and Larson delivered her second homerun of the day to tie the game at three. The Lakers were not done there, Hamm reached on an error and then Alderson blasted a two run homerun to give the Lakers their first lead of the game. Back-to-back doubles from Brooklyn Bode and Davis brought up Cullinane. She continued her hot hitting, driving a ball to the right center gap, allowing both runners to score.

With the Lakers bringing a 7-3 lead into the seventh inning, Hawkeye tried to mount a comeback. With one out, they were able to get a single. A groundout to Cullinane advanced the runner and brought the Redtails down to their final out. A single to right allowed the runner to score and the game to continue. Larson quickly got the final out of the game to groundout to Leighton and complete the 7-4 victory.

Taylor Larson earned the win for the Lakers in game two. She threw all seven innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits and three walks, while striking out four. Larson also led the Lakers at the plate, going 3-4 with three runs batted in. Alexis Cullinane had two hits and two runs batted in.

Iowa Lakes will be on the road again to take on Northeast Community College on Wednesday, April 24th. Games times will be 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
