Lakers take 3rd at SCC Shootout

The Iowa Lakes women's golf team traveled down to Salina, Kansas to compete in the two-day SCC Shootout hosted by Kansas Wesleyan University on Monday-Tuesday. The Lakers would finish 3rd in an eight-team field with a two-day total of 719 with a round one score of 357 and a round two score of 362. Kelly Winter led the team with a splits of 83 and 81, good enough for a 7th place finish in the 43 player field. Iowa Lakes was the only two-year college at the event.

"We keep showing flashes of what we are capable of, but haven't really been able to put four good scores together at the same time." said Iowa Lakes golf coach Jarvis Weber. "This tournament was a good measuring stick for us. Being the only two-year school here, the ladies were able to watch some older players and learn from how they hold themselves and really get to see that we are not far behind some very good teams. Kelly and Isabella have a done a good job pacing us, even if they haven't really hit their potential yet. Everybody is still learning and progessing, and once we all come together, this will be a really good team. For now, we are going to have to learn how to grind our way to a score we are proud of."

Isabella Santistevan was not far behind her teammate with a ninth place finish with splits of 81-86. Abby Gaudian posted rounds of 91-93, Carli Gebel carded two rounds of 102, and Paige Wieck would post 107-103.

"We have a lot to look back on a learn from, but we also have a long way to go before we are satisfied with how we play. These ladies continue to work hard and are setting a baseline that we can work forward from. As long as we stay patient and focus on the biggest areas of improvement, we will continue to progress. And that is the name of the game."

The Lakers will look to continue their progression next Monday-Tuesday at another two-day event down in Columbia, Missouri at the Collombia College Cougar Classic on October 4th and 5th.
