Lakers go 1-1 on First Day at Cloud County

Iowa Lakes Community College softball fell short in game one of the day. They took the 4-2 loss from Central Community College- Columbus. Despite pitching a great game, Naomi Tolmachoff took the loss. Sophomore, Julia Sullwold picked up her first win of the season over Southeast Community College with a 12-5 victory in game two.

Game One- CCC 4, ILCC 2

Despite having eight hits in game one, the Lakers could only muster two runs. Kacie Salazar was 2-3 with two doubles, two runs batted in, and a walk. Freshman, Lexi Pallisco, was 2-2 with a sacrifice bunt. Desiree Lopez also had two singles in the game.

The first inning started out a little rocky, as Bibiana Rosales allowed two runs on one hit and four walks. Naomi Tolmachoff came in with bases loaded and two outs in the first to get the final out of the inning.

Both teams remained scoreless until the third inning when Lopez had a one out single and advanced to second on a Leilani San Pedro ground out. Lopez then scored on a two out double off the bat for Salazar to cut the lead down to 2-1.

The Lakers again got something going in the bottom of the fifth inning with a leadoff single from Sullwold. Sullwold was then caught stealing before Lopez reached on an error by the first baseman. Lopez then stole second and third base before coming home on another two out double by Salazar.

Central Community College picked up the final two runs of the game in the top of the seventh inning. They scored two runs on three hits and two passed balls.

Bibiana Rosales took the loss for the Lakers. Tolmachoff pitched a majority of the game for the Lakers, allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out seven.

Game Two- ILCC 12, SCC 5

The Lakers saw sixteen hits in the 12-5 victory over the Southeast Community College Storm. San Pedro led the way for the Lakers, going 3-4 with two doubles, two runs batted in, and a stolen base. Kaitlin Walsh was also 3-4 for the Lakers with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Sullwold, Lopez, Salazar, and Frank each had two hits for the Lakers.

Frank got things going for the Lakers in the top of the second with a leadoff double to right field. She then advanced to third on a passed ball, before scoring on a Walsh single to left field. The Lakers scored again in the third off a San Pedro double to go ahead 2-0.

The Storm came back firing in the bottom of the third, taking the lead with a four run inning. They did this on four hits, two walks, and one Laker error.

The Lakers pushed right back in the top of the fourth scoring one run. Walsh led off with a single and advanced to second on a Laurie Custard walk. Montanna Popp was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sullwold walked to bring Walsh home and bring the Lakers within one run.

The Storm went down 1, 2, 3 in the top of the fifth and the Lakers took a one run lead in the bottom of the inning. Walsh reached on a fielder's choice before Laurie Custard shot a ball over the right field fence.

The Lakers broke things open in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs on six hits. The Lakers scored their final run of the game in the top of the seventh when Lopez came around on a San Pedro double.

Sullwold picked up the win for the Lakers, allowing one run on fours hits and three walks. Tolmachoff started the game, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits, two walks, and one strikeout.

The Lakers improve their record to 3-1 on the season. They will take on Cloud County Community College at 10:00 AM and Highland Community College at 12:00 PM tomorrow.
