Lakers Drop Two in Season Opener

The Iowa Lakes Softball team travelled to Council Bluffs, Iowa to take on Division I Iowa Western Community College in a non-conference double header. The Lakers dropped game one 6-2 and game two 10-2 (5 innings).  

Game One: IWCC 6, ILCC 2 

The Reivers struck first in the bottom of the second inning, scoring one run. The leadoff batter reached on a Laker error and was sacrificed to second to be put into scoring position. Alexis Chase got the next batter to strike out for the second out of the inning, but the following Reiver hitter tripled to right center to score the first run of the game. Chase got the final out to the inning with a ground out to Mackenna Otte at short. 

The Lakers quickly struck back in the top of the third, scoring one run of their own. With two outs, Chase stepped up and blasted a triple down the right field line. Kailey Maksim followed with a single, scoring Chase. 

The bottom of the third saw Iowa Western regain their lead, scoring three runs on two outs off four hits and one hit by pitch. The Reivers scored another run in the bottom of the fourth off two doubles and another in the bottom of the sixth on two hits. 

Iowa Lakes earned one run back in the top of the seventh. Amanda Franke reached on an error on the Reivers pitcher. She then took second on a ball in the dirt, to put herself in scoring position. Iowa Western got the next two Lakers to strikeout, before Kiley Hill hit a fly ball to right field that was misplayed, scoring Franke for the final run of the game. 

Lexi Chase took the loss for the Lakers, allowing six runs, five earned, in six innings. She allowed nine hits, while striking out six and hitting one. Kaitlin Roundy, Lexi Chase, Kiley Hill, Kailey Maksim, and Emma Kral each had one hit in the game. 

Game Two: IWCC 10, ILCC 2 

The Lakers took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. With one out, Maksim singled to the shortstop before Eliya Johnson smashed a ball over the right field fence. Johnson made quick work in the bottom of the first, getting the three Iowa Western hitters to pop out, ground out, and ground out. 

The score remained the same, until the Reivers opened up the gates and took a 7-2 lead after the third inning. Iowa Western scored seven runs on five hits and six walks. The Reivers scored the final three runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth on four hits and two walks to end the game early. 

The Lakers again had five hits in the game. These hits came from Lexi Chase, Kailey Maksim, Eliya Johnson, Kaitlin Roundy, and Mackenna Otte. Johnson homered in the game and had two runs batted in. Eliya Johnson took the loss for the Lakers. She pitched 2.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs on four hits, seven walks, and one strikeout. Kiley Hill pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks.  

The Lakers will be back in action on Wednesday, March 17th, when they open up conference play at home against Des Moines Area Community College. Games will be played and 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
