Lakers Win Four on Weekend

 

After a seven-hour weather delay and venue change, the Lakers finally got to take on Southeastern Community College in their bubble on Saturday. The Lakers took game one 5-4 and game two 6-2. The Lakers then got to play outside for the final two game of the series on Sunday. They won game one of the day 3-2 and fame two 8-7 in eight innings. Iowa Lakes is now 12-10 overall and 12-8 in conference.

Game One: ILCC 5, SCC 4

Southeastern Community College took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the first. They scored one run on two singles and a walk.

The score remained 1-0, until the Lakers scored two runs in the third. Chase hit a one out single and came around to score on an Eliya Johnson shot over the left field fence. The Blackhawks took their second lead of the game in the bottom half of the inning, also scoring two runs on a hit and homerun.

Allie McCabe hit her second homerun of the week in the fourth to put the Lakers back on top 4-2. The Lakers extended their lead by one on the fifth on a Blackhawk error that allowed Chase to get to third and a single from Johnson.

Kailey Maksim scored the Lakers final run of the game in the top of the seventh, which proved to be a big run. She led off with a one out walk and advanced to second on Johnson's third hit of the game. With two outs, Kamryn Buntrock remained calm and drove a ball to right center to score Maksim. Southeastern made the game interesting in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run on two hits.

Chase picked up her second win of the week, allowing four runs, three earned on ten hits and one walk, while striking out six. The Lakers were led at the plate by Eliya Johnson. She was 3-4 with a homerun and three runs batted in. Allie McCabe was 2-3, also with a homerun in the game.

 

Game Two: ILCC 6, SCC 2

The Lakers used the long ball to win game two, scoring all six runs on homeruns. The Lakers led off the game with back-to-back homeruns in the top of the first from Chase and Maksim. Johnson then reached on a Southeastern error, before Buntrock hit the Lakers third homerun of the inning over the right field fence to put them up 4-0.

Southeastern got one run back in the bottom of the first, scoring one run on three Laker errors and a fielder's choice.

Iowa Lakes hit two solo homeruns in the second to put themselves up 6-1. The homeruns came off the bats of Chase and Johnson.

The Lakers threatened again in the top of the fourth, loading the bases up on three straight walks, but failed to execute to push another run across the plate.

The final run of the game was scored by the Blackhawks in the sixth on two hits.

Eliya Johnson earned the win for the Lakers, allowing one earned run on three hits and four walks, while striking out eight Southeastern batters. The homeruns came from Kamryn Buntrock, Lexi Chase (2), Eliya Johnson, and Kailey Maksim

 

Game Three: ILCC 3, SCC 2

Chase got things going again for the Lakers in the top of the first with a leadoff double. With two outs, Kaitlin Roundy and Buntrock hit back-to-back doubles to put the Lakers up 2-0. The Blackhawks got one run back in their half of the inning on two hits.

Southeastern threatened to push runs across in the third, when they led off the inning with a single and was followed with a one out double. With runners on second and third, Chase got the next two Blackhawk hitters to fly out to Mackenna Otte and Johnson to preserve to 2-1 lead.

Iowa Lakes scored their final run of the game in the fourth. McCabe hit a one out single before advancing to second on a walk. An infield fly from Myah Ehlenfeldt brought up Amanda Franke, who delivered a double to left center, scoring McCabe. The Blackhawks shrunk the lead, by scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth. They did this on a single, sacrifice bunt, and single.

The final inning of the game saw the Blackhawks ground out to Buntrock, fly out to Otte, and fly out to Maksim.

Chase earned her first win of the day, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and striking out four. At the plate, the Lakers saw six of their eight hits fall for extra bases. Lexi Chase was 2-4 with one run scored.

 

Game Four: ILCC 8, SCC 7

Iowa Lakes took advantage of an early Blackhawk error to score in the first inning. The Southeastern pitcher misplayed a pop fly from Chase to start the game with a runner on first. Maksim followed with a walk to put Chase in scoring position. Two infield fly balls from Johnson and Roundy brought up Buntrock, who stepped up and singled to center, scoring Chase from second.

The Lakers put two more runs up on the board in the third when Maksim led off with a single and crossed the plate on a Buntrock homerun.

With the Lakers up 3-0, they continued to put pressure on the Blackhawks at the plate. The fourth inning was led off with a walk from Kiley Hill. Hill put herself in scoring position by stealing second base and quickly came around to score on an Emma Kral double. Otte then ran for Kral and came around to score a Chase double to center, to put the Lakers up 5-0.

Southeastern scraped together a run in the bottom half of the fourth on a single, walk, and Laker error. Iowa Lakes saw their lead slip away in the fifth. Southeastern led off the inning with a walk, which was followed by a Laker error. The next Blackhawks hitter hit a ball over the left field fence to bring the game within one run. The Lakers got the next batter to groundout to Otte before a single started their rally again. With a runner at first, another ball was seen leaving the yard to give the Blackhawks their first lead of the game. The final two outs of the inning came from two fly outs to Maksim.

With the Lakers now down one going into the top of the seventh, it was score or go home time. With Buntrock on second base, McCabe hit a rocket off the pitcher to put runners on the corners with one out. Hill then singled to short to load up the bases and put Kral in another big hitting position. Kral stepped up and singled to center, scoring both Buntrock and McCabe and giving the Lakers a 7-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

The Blackhawks were not phased by the Lakers momentum, as they hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. A foul tip strikeout made it one out with runners at first and second. The next batter then singled to center to score the runner from second and advance the runner on first to third. With one out and runners on the corners, Chase go the next two outs on a fly out to herself and a groundout to Johnson.

Now in the eighth inning the Lakers needed a run. Kailey Maksim delivered with a one out solo homerun to give the Lakers an 8-7 lead. Southeastern made things very interesting in the bottom half of the inning, again leading off with two straight singles. A lineout to Johnson at third kept the runners at first and second with one out. Both runners then advanced on a passed ball before the Otte got the final two outs of the game to complete the 8-7 eight inning victory.

Chase picked up her second victory of the day and third win of the weekend. She pitched three innings, allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out one. Eliya Johnson pitched five innings, allowing six runs, four earned on four hits and six walks. She struck out one Blackhawk hitter. Emma Kral and Kamryn Buntrock were the leaders for the Lakers at the plate in game four. Emma Kral was 2-3 with three runs batted in and Kamryn Buntrock was 2-5 with three runs batted in. Kiley Hill, Allison McCabe, and Kailey Maksim each added two this of their own, with Kailey Maksim hitting the go-ahead homerun in the top of the eight.

The Lakers will be back in action on Wednesday, April 14th, at home. They will be taking on North Iowa Area Community College at 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
