Roundy's Walk-Off Propels Lakers to a Win

Roundy's Walk-Off Propels Lakers to a Win

The Iowa Lakes Softball team won in dramatic fashion on Wednesday. A Kaitlin Roundy walk-off double earned Iowa Lakes the 2-1 win in game two. Unfortunately, the Lakers suffered a 6-0 loss in game one. The Lakers are now 21-19 overall and 21-17 in conference.

Game One: IWCC 6, ILCC 0

The Reivers scored in their first inning on two walks and a single. The Lakers loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning on a Kailey Maksim single and two walks, but Iowa Western got the final out of the inning on a strikeout.

Iowa Western put up another run in the second on a triple and sacrifice fly. The Reivers put the game out of reach in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on a single and two homeruns. Their final run of the game came off of a single and double in the seventh inning.

Lexi Chase took the loss for the Lakers in game one. She allowed six earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. The Lakers were led at the plate by Kailey Maksim who went 2-4 with a double.

Game Two: ILCC 2, IWCC 1

Iowa Lakes again threatened in the first inning on back-to-back walk to Maksim and Eliya Johnson. An Iowa Western error loaded the bases, but unfortunately the Lakers could not capitalize and push a run across the plate.

Some tough defense by both teams kept the score 0-0 until the Reivers put up one run in the top of the sixth. This was made possible because of back-to-back singles and a walk. A two-out error by the Lakers allowed one run to score. The Lakers got out of the inning on a groundout to Kamryn Buntrock.

With their backs against the wall, the Lakers delivered. Amanda Franke led off with a single to right. A ball in the dirt allowed her to advance to second and then scoot to third on a Maksim single. Maksim then stole second. With runners at second and third, Eliya Johnson hit into a fielder's choice when Franke was thrown out at home. Kaitlin Roundy stepped up to the plate with Maksim at third and Johnson at first with two outs. She came up big for the Lakers, hitting a double to right field, scoring both runners, and completing the Lakers 2-1 walk-off win.

Eliya Johnson picked up the win for the Lakers in game two. She allowed one run, zero earned, on eight hits and four hits, while striking out one Iowa Western hitter. Eliya Johnson also led the Lakers at the plate, going 2-2 with two walks and one run scored. Kailey Maksim was also 2-3 with one walk and Kaitlin Roundy had two runs batted in during the game.

The Lakers will be back in action on Saturday, May 1st, to take on Division I Marshalltown Community College. Game times will be at 1:00 and 3:00 PM. They will also be honoring their sophomores on this day.
