Lakers Strong Offense Results in Two Wins

The Iowa Lakes softball team took two wins against Southeast Community College on Friday. The Lakers took game one 12-0 in five innings and game two 18-10 in five innings.

GAME 1: 12 (ILCC), 0 (SCC) 5 innings

The Lakers came out swinging in their first at bats, scoring three runs. Lexi Chase drew a one out walk, before coming around to score on Bryn Bohmann's first homerun of the day. Back to back singles from Eliya Johnson and MacKenna Jones puts runners at first and second with Kaitlin Roundy up to bat. Roundy singled up the middle to score Johnson and the final run of the inning. Chase went out and got her first three up, three down inning, getting one strikeout and two ground outs to Mackenne Otte.

Chase again got things started, hitting a one out double to right center and scored on a Johnson single. Up 4-0, the Lakers got three quick outs on two strikeouts and a groundout to Bohmann.

Iowa Lakes scored another two runs in the fourth when Chase led off with a single and advanced to second on a Bohmann walk. Johnson drove in her second run of the game on a single to left. Jones hit a fly ball to right, that Bohmann tagged up on to put runners at first and third. A Roundy single scored Bohmann and put the Lakers up 7-0. Southeast got their first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth, but the Lakers quickly shut that threat down with a pop out to Otte and a ground out to Bohmann.

Alyssa Thorson started off the fifth reaching on a Storm error, allowing her to advance to second. A Karisa Hernandez walk and Chase double, scored one and put runners at second and third. Bohmann walked to load the bases, before Johnson hit a grand slam to put the Lakers up 12-0. Chase mowed down Southeast in the bottom of the inning with two strikeouts and a groundout.

Lexi Chase picked up her first win of the season, allowing zero runs on two hits. She struck out eight of her eighteen batters that she faced. At the plate, Eliya Johnson was 4-4 with a homerun, six runs batted in, and four runs scored. Chase was also perfect at the plate, going 3-3 with a walk and four runs scored.

GAME 2: 18 (ILCC), 10 (SCC) 6 innings

The Lakers again scored quickly, putting up two runs in the first on a Chase single and Bohmann homerun. Southeast Community College came out swinging, scoring tens runs on eight hits, three walks, and one Laker error.

Iowa Lakes showed some great fight in the second inning, cutting the lead to 10-6. Back to back one out walks to Kiley Hill and Allie McCabe brought up Hernandez who singled to score Hill. A Chase ground ball to the left side of the infield scored McCabe to put the Lakers down 10-4. The Lakers were not done yet though. Bohmann loaded the bases on a single to the shortstop, before Johnson walked. Chase scored the final run of the inning on a passed ball. With Johnson now in the game pitching, she kept the Laker momentum going when she struck out three straight batters.

With a McCabe singled and then advanced to second on a Storm error, bringing Chase up to bat. She quickly singled to center to bring the game to within three runs. Johnson again made quick work of Southeast with two ground outs and a line out.

Johnson brought her confidence to the box, hitting a homerun to start off the fourth inning. She then went out and struck out the first two Storm batters, before recording the final out of the inning on a fly out to Chase.

The Lakers led off the fifth inning with a McCabe walk. She advanced to second on a Hernandez sacrifice bunt. Bohmann then smashed her second homerun of the game to tie the ballgame at 10 a piece.

Iowa Lakes then put together an eight run sixth inning to end the game early. Thorson singled, Grafton walked, and Hill singled to load up the bases. A McCabe walk and a Hernandez sacrifice fly put the Lakers up 12-10 with runners at first and second. Chase singled, scoring Hill and Bohmann hit a sacrifice fly to score two more runs for the Lakers. A Johnson intentional walk was followed by a Roundy single to score Chase from third. Thorson scored the final runs of the game on a three run homerun to left. The Lakers made quick work of the Storm in the bottom half of the inning, getting three straight groundouts.

Eliya Johnson picked up the win for the Lakers, allowing three earned runs in 5.2 innings pitched. She allowed five hits, while striking out six and walking two. Bryn Bohmann led the Lakers, going 3-4 with two homeruns and five runs batted in. Lexi Chase was 4-5 with three runs batted in, while Kaitlin Roundy added three hits of her own.
