Laker Softball Finishes the Weekend 3-1

The Iowa Lakes softball team split with Iowa Central Community College on their final two games of the weekend. The Lakers posted fifteen hits in game one to outscore their opponents 12-1. The Lakers were on the wrong side of a seventh inning walk off, as they dropped game two 5-4. The Lakers are now 12-3 overall and 3-1 in conference.

GAME 1: 12 (ILCC), 1 (ICCC)

The Lakers took to the long ball again to post their first two runs of the game. Bryn Bohmann hit one in the first inning, which was followed by an Alyssa Thorson solo homerun in the top of the second.

Only leading 2-0 in the top of the sixth, the Laker bats exploded. Allie McCabe led off the inning with a single, which was quickly followed by a Thorson single and a passed ball to put runners at second and third. Amanda Franke stepped up and drove a ball to center, scoring both runners and giving the Lakers a 4-0 lead. A single from Lexi Chase and walk from Karisa Hernandez loaded the bases to bring up Bohmann. She doubled to left, scoring Franke and Chase. Eliya Johnson followed with a sacrifice fly to score Hernandez and give the Lakers a 7-0 lead. Brielle Hogan drove the final run of the inning on a single to left.

The Tritons got one run back in their half of the inning to force a seventh inning. They did this on two singles and a double.

Iowa Lakes was not done scoring, putting up five runs in the top of the seventh. Franke drew a walk and advanced to second on a Triton error on a ball off the bat of Chase. Hernandez tripled to center, clearing the bases and crossed the plate herself on a Johnson homerun.

With the Lakers up 12-1, Chase got the first Triton batter of the inning to ground out to Mackenna Otte. The next two batters reached on a hit by pitch and single. A Chase strikeout and fly out to Otte ended the game.

Eliya Johnson and Bryn Bohmann each had three hits and three runs batted in during the game. Brielle Hogan and Alyssa Thorson each had multi-hit games for the Lakers as well. Lexi Chase picked up the win, allowing one earned run on eight hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts.

GAME 2: 5 (ICCC), 4 (ILCC)

The Lakers again took to the long ball to get themselves going in game two. Lexi Chase homered in the top of the third to give the Lakers the 1-0 lead. Iowa Central quickly responded in their half of the inning, putting four up on the scoreboard. A leadoff walk was followed by a one out single. With two outs and runners at first and second, the Triton batter drove a ball to center to tie up the game. This was followed by a Laker error to score another run. A walk loaded the bases and a single scored another two runners.

Amanda Franke drew a one out walk to start the offense in the fifth. She stole second and third to put herself in scoring position. A pop fly that was misjudged by Iowa Central gave the Lakers their first run of the inning. A double from Bryn Bohmann brought Karisa Hernandez to third and a Eliya Johnson single scored both runners and tied the game at four a piece.

Iowa Central scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff single. A strikeout and ground out had a Triton runner at second with two outs. A Laker error on a pop fly allowed the final run of the game to score.

Eliya Johson was 2-4 at the plate with two runs batted in. Bryn Bohmann, Alyssa Thorson, and Kaitlin Roundy each had two hits in the game. Eliya Johnson took her first loss of the season, allowing five runs, one earned, on four hits, two walks, and six strikeouts.

The Lakers will travel to Sioux City, Iowa to take on Morningside JV on Thursday, March 24th in a non-conference double header. Game times will be 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
