Lakers Take Down #1 DMACC

The Iowa Lakes softball team split with #1 ranked Des Moines Area Community College on Saturday. The Lakers took game one 11-10, before falling 13-5 in five innings. The Lakers are now 4-2 in conference play and 14-4-1 overall.

GAME 1: 11 (ILCC), 10 (DMACC)

Lexi Chase led the game off with a single, which was quickly followed by a Bryn Bohmann single to left. A Kaitlin Roundy line drive down the line scored Chase and put the Lakers on the board.

The score remained 1-0, until the Bears tied things up in the bottom of the second on a solo-homerun.

Iowa Lakes broke things open in the third with an eight run inning that was started by a Chase double. Bohmann scored Chase on a single up the middle. An Eliya Johnson walk and another Roundy single loaded the bases. Karisa Hernandez singled to the shortstop to put the Lakers up 3-1. The Lakers then capitalized on two DMACC errors to score two more runs and put runners at first and second. Alyssa Thorson singled to center to load the bases up once again. A two out Chase single scored both Brielle Hogan and Allie McCabe to make the score 7-1 in favor of the Lakers. Back to back Bear errors allowed two more runs to score in the inning.

DMACC got seven runs back in the bottom of the fourth. They led off with a homerun, which was followed by a double and another Bear homerun. With the score now 9-4, the Bears weren't done yet. A single was followed by two quick outs, but the Bears then capitalized on a couple of Laker mental errors. Two misplayed pop flies followed by a single brought the Bears within two runs. A passed ball allowed the final run of the inning to score and made the score 9-8 in favor of the Lakers.

The Bears tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth. They led off the inning with a walk, which was followed by a single. With runners at first and second, Amanda Franke came up huge and threw a runner out trying to advance home on a single. Runners at second and third allowed the Bears to score on a sacrifice fly, making the score 9-9.

With the game tied up, the Lakers got back to work offensively. Johnson led off the inning with a single off the right field fence. Brielle Bartelt came in to run for her and advanced to second on a Roundy single. Hernandez sacrificed her at bat to advance the runners, bringing up MacKenna Jones. Jones came up clutch with a double to center, scoring both runners and giving the Lakers their final two runs of the game.

Iowa Lakes got two quick outs in the bottom of the sixth, but another DMACC homerun brought them within one run.

Jones got the first batter in the bottom of the seventh to strikeout, before they got a runner on with a single. With Chase now back in the game to pitch, the Bears stays on the attack getting a single. A Bear pop fly to Johnson was caught, bringing the Bears down to their final out. A hit by pitch loaded the bases, before Chase got the final out of the game on a lineout to Thorson in center.

Lexi Chase led the Lakers at the plate, going 3-4 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Kaitlin Roundy was also 3-4, while Bryn Bohmann, Eliya Johnson, Karisa Hernandez, and Alyssa Thorson each had two hits in the game. MacKenna Jones picked up the win for the Lakers, going 2.1 innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits and two strikeouts. Chase started the game and picked up the save, allowing eight earned runs on twelve hits, three strikeouts, one walk, and one hit by pitch. Kiley Hill added .1 innings, walking three batters.

GAME 2: 13 (DMACC), 5 (ILCC)

The Lakers quickly got themselves on the board in game two, with a leadoff double by Chase and a homerun from Bohmann. Unfortunately, the Lakers fell apart defensively in the first inning. The Bears put up seven runs on five hits, one walk, and three Laker errors.

Iowa Lakes continued to fight in the game, scoring two runs in the top half of the second. McCabe led off with a single and advanced to second on a Franke walk. Chase doubled to right, scoring McCabe and advancing Franke to third. Bohmann grounded to the shortstop, scoring Franke and bringing the Lakers to within three.

The score remained 7-4, until DMACC scored one run in the third. With two outs, the Bears singled, stole second, and scored on a Laker error.

Johnson led off the fifth with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. The Lakers capitalized on a DMACC error to score a run, making the score 8-5. Unfortunately, the Bears completed the game putting five runs up on the board in the bottom half of the inning. They did this on four singles and a homerun.

Lexi Chase again led the Lakers at the plate, going 2-3 with one run scored and one run batted in. Allie McCabe was also 2-3 with a run scored. Eliya Johnson took the loss for the Lakers, allowing eleven runs, three earned on eleven hits, two walks, and one strikeout. MacKenna Jones allowed two earned runs on two hits.

The Lakers will be back to take on #1 DMACC tomorrow, March 27th, at 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
