Lakers Split With Division I Iowa Western

Lakers Split With Division I Iowa Western

The Iowa Lakes softball team split with Division I Iowa Western on Tuesday. Chase picked up the win in game one, throwing a seven inning shutout to lead the Lakers to a 5-0 win. Iowa Western took advantage of a five run inning to top the Lakers 9-5 in game two. The Lakers are now 15-7-1 on the season overall.

GAME 1: 5 (ILCC), 0 (IWCC)

It was hard for either team to get things started offensively until the Lakers scored two in the third. Allie McCabe led off the inning and scored on an Alyssa Thorson homerun.

Lexi Chase and the Laker defense held strong in the field, allowing just four runners on base through the first four innings.

Kiley Hill led off the fifth inning with a walk and advanced to second on a Thorson sacrifice bunt. Chase walked and Bryn Bohmann singled to load up the bases. Eliya Johnson then hit a ball to deep left field that scored Hill, but Chase was thrown out at the plate. With runners at second and third, Kaitlin Roundy hit a ball to center that was misplayed, allowing two more Iowa Lakes runs to score.

With the Lakers up 5-0, they found themselves in a little jam in the sixth inning. A leadoff walk was followed by a single to give the Reivers a little hope. Mackenna Otte and Bohmann each caught fly balls to record outs one and two of the inning. A walk loaded up the bases, but Chase got the final out of the inning with a pop fly to Roundy.

Lexi Chase picked up the win for the Lakers, allowing just five hits, two walks, and eleven strikeouts in her seven inning shutout. Offensively, Bryn Bohmann and Eliya Johnson each had multi-hit games for the Lakers.

GAME 3: 9 (IWCC), 5 (ILCC)

The Lakers found themselves in a 3-0 hole after just two innings of play. Thorson again was the spark for the Lakers at the plate, leading off the third inning with a single. She then stole second and advanced to third on a groundout from Chase. Bohmann followed with a groundout to third to score Thorson and put the Lakers on the board. The Reivers got that run back in the bottom half of the third, scoring on a solo-homerun.

The Lakers got things going again in the fourth when Brielle Hogan was hit by a pitch. Amanda Franke doubled to right center and Thorson walked to load up the bases. Bohmann came up with a two out single to left, scoring Hogan and Franke and bringing the Lakers to within one run.

Roundy reached in the top of the fifth when Iowa Western had a fielding error. With Kiley Hill entering to run for Roundy, she advanced to third on a single from McCabe and a Reiver error. McCabe stole second and then both runners scampered home on a Franke single. Unfortunately, the Lakers gave up five runs in the bottom of the fifth on five hits and one hit by pitch to give Iowa Western the 9-5 victory.

Amanda Franke led the Lakers at the plate, going 2-3 with two runs batted in and one run scored. Allie McCabe also added two hits for the Lakers. Eliya Johnson took the loss for the Lakers. She allowed nine earned runs on eight hits and five strikeouts. MacKenna Jones pitched 1.1 innings, allowing zero runs on two hits.

The Lakers will have their first home series of the year this weekend, taking on Northeast Community College at 1:00 and 3:00 PM on Saturday. They will play Northeast again on Sunday at 12:00 and 2:00 PM.
