Lakers Take Down #9 Kirkwood

The Iowa Lakes softball team split with #9 Kirkwood Community College. The Lakers won game one in walk off fashion, winning 10-9. The Lakers then fell to the Eagles 5-2 in game two. The Lakers are now 19-7-1 overall and 9-3 in conference.

GAME 1: 10 (ILCC), 9 (KCC) 

Kirkwood was first on the board, scoring one run in the top of the first. Two singles and a Laker error allowed the Eagles run to score.

The Lakers took the lead in the bottom of the second when Allie McCabe reached on a one out single. McCabe was forced out at second on ground ball from Amanda Franke. Franke then stole second and came around to score on an Alyssa Thorson single. Lexi Chase hit a two out homerun that put the Lakers up 3-1. Not to be outdone, Bryn Bohmann followed with a homerun of her own.

The Eagles quickly responded by putting two runs on the scoreboard in the top of the third. A leadoff single and error put a runner in scoring position. Another Laker error put runners on the corners. The Eagles followed with a groundout and single to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Lakers.

MacKenna Jones led off the bottom of the third with a double off the top of the left field fence. Paige Grafton scored Jones from second with a double down the third base line.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, Kirkwood homered to bring the score 5-4.

The bottom of the sixth was started with a single from Chase. Eliya Johnson hit the Lakers third homerun of the game to put them up 7-4. The Lakers then rallied on two outs to score two more runs. Grafton singled and advanced to second on a Karisa Hernandez single. With Brielle Bartelt running for Grafton, she quickly scored on a single from McCabe. With Lakers on the corners, McCabe stole second. When the Eagles threw down to try and get McCabe out, Hernandez scampered home to give the Lakers the 9-4 lead.

Kirkwood tied things up in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs on two outs. They did this on one walk, two singles, and a homerun.

With the game now tied, Thorson led off the inning with a bunt single. Chase was walked and both runners advanced on a ground out from Kiley Hill. Thorson then stole home on a throw that got past the pitcher to win the game for the Lakers.

Iowa Lakes was led at the plate by Lexi Chase. She was 3-3 with two runs scored, two runs batted in, and two walks. Alyssa Thorson was 3-4 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Lexi Chase earned the win for the Lakers, throwing all seven innings. She allowed nine runs, six earned, on ten hits, one walk, and striking out six.

GAME 2: 5 (KCC), 2 (ILCC) 

Kirkwood got on the board first, scoring three runs in the top of the third. Three singles, one walk, and two Laker errors allowed the Eagles to take the lead. McCabe got one run back for the Lakers in the bottom half of the inning when she led off with a walk. McCabe then stole second and scored on a Franke single to center.

The Eagles put another two runs up on the board in the top of the fourth. Two singles were followed by a stole base to put runners at second and third. Kirkwood then hit their third single of the inning, put the Eagles up 5-1. The Lakers again answered, scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth. Jones doubled and scored on a McCabe double.

Neither team could get another runner across the plate, completing the 5-2 Kirkwood victory. Allie McCabe led the Lakers at the plate, going 2-2 with one run scored, one run batted in, and one walk. MacKenna Jones also contributed two runs and one run scored in the ball game. Eliya Johnson suffered the loss for the Lakers. She allowed five runs, three earned, on eight hits, three walks, and eight strikeouts.

The Lakers will take on #9 Kirkwood Community College in a double header tomorrow, April 10th, at 12:00 and 2:00 PM.
