Lakers Fall to #9 Kirkwood

The Iowa Lakes Softball team battled hard, but came up short in both games on Sunday. The Lakes dropped game one 4-3 and game two 4-2. The Lakers are now19-9-1 overall and 9-5 in conference.

GAME 1: 4 (KCC), 3 (ILCC)

Both teams had opportunities to score early in the game, but the defense and pitchers came up with big outs to keep the score 0-0 until the top of the fourth. With two outs and a runner at first, Kirkwood stole second base and then scored on a single to center.

The Eagles extended their lead in the top of the fifth when they came up with a triple with two outs and two runners on. With Kirkwood now up 3-0, they scored their final run on a single.

Iowa Lakes put up a fight, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Allie McCabe and Kiley Hill both reached on Kirkwood errors. On the error on Hill's ball, McCabe was able to advance to third. Franke then grounded out to score McCabe and advance Hill to second. Lexi Chase followed with a single, advancing Hill to third, who then scored on an Alyssa Thorson groundball. Chase scored the third run of the inning on an Eliya Johnson single. With runners at second and third, the Eagles got the final Laker batter to fly out to the infield, ending the Laker comeback.

At the plate, Chase was 2-4 with one run scored. Chase suffered the loss for the Lakers, allowing four earned runs on eleven hits, one walk, and five strikeouts.

GAME 2: 4 (KCC), 2 (ILCC)

The Eagles got on the board in the top of the second with back to back singles that was followed by a Laker error to score one run. An infield single loaded the bases for Kirkwood and scored two runs on a single up the middle. Kirkwood scored their final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.

With the Lakers down 4-0, they scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Lexi Chase and Alyssa Thorson singled, both runners then advanced on an Eliya Johnson groundout. MacKenna Jones then laced one at the third basemen that was misplayed, allowing both Chase and Thorson to score.

Lexi Chase and Alyssa Thorson each had one hit and one run scored in the game. Eliya Johnson took the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits, two walks, and five strikeouts.

The Lakers will travel to Marshalltown Community College on Friday and Saturday to take on the Tigers. Game times will be 2:00 and 4:00 PM on Friday and 1:00 and 3:00 PM on Saturday.
