#20 Lakers Drop Two to #8 Kirkwood

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team lost two games to conference foe Kirkwood Community College. The Lakers lost game one 8-5 and game two 14-4. The Lakers are now 15-5 on the season and 0-2 in conference.

GAME 1: 8 (KCC), 5 (ILCC)

The Eagles got on the scoreboard first, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first on two homeruns. Kirkwood put up another run in the bottom of the second with leadoff single and double. With runners at second the third, the Eagles executed a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-0.

Iowa Lakes got on the board in the fourth on a Paige Grafton solo homerun. The Lakers then took the lead in the top of the sixth with MacKenna Jones leading off the inning with a single. Grafton followed with a single of her own, advancing Jones to third. A pop out and a fly out brought Abby Zahn up to the plate. She delivered with a single to score Jones. Olivia Funk then followed with a single of her own to score Grafton and tie things up at 3-3. Brielle Bartelt entered to run for Funk. Kiaya Dunbar kept the rally going with a groundball to third base, a throwing error on the play allowed Zahn and Bartelt to score. This put the Lakers up 5-3.

With the Lakers up 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Kirkwood delivered five runs to pick up the win. They did this on three singles, a homerun, and a Laker error.

Paige Grafton was the leader in the box for the Lakers. She was 2-4 with two runs scored, one run batted in, and a homerun. Brynn Bohmann was 2-3 with a hit by pitch. MacKenna Jones suffered her first loss of the season. She pitched all seven innings, allowing eight runs, four earned on eleven hits and two walks. Jones struck out eleven batters in the game.

GAME 2: 14 (KCC), 4 (ILCC)

Kirkwood wasted no time getting on the board in game two. They put up four runs in the top of the first on three hits, one walk, one Laker error, and a sacrifice fly. The Eagles put up another two runs in the second on a single and homerun.

Down 6-0, the Lakers fought their way back into the game. Dunbar reached in the third on an error and the scored on a Bohmann homerun.

Iowa Lakes scored again in the fourth when Hernandez led off with a double off the wall. Zahn was walked and both runners advanced on a Sydnee Swiggum sacrifice bunt. Dunbar then stepped up and singled to score both runners and put the Lakers within two. Kirkwood quickly responded with one run in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff double, stolen base, and ground out.

Unfortunately, the Lakers could not get out of the fifth to give themselves a chance. The Lakers allowed seven runs in the bottom of the inning. The Eagles did this on three hits, three walks, and one error.

Bryn Bohmann led the Lakers at the plate in game two. She was 2-3 with two runs batted in, one run scored, and a homerun. Kiaya Dunbar was 1-2 with two runs batted in and one run scored. Baylee O'Donnell took the loss in the circle. She pitched two innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits and one walk. Jayda Staige pitched the final two innings, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on three hits and four walks. She struck out one Eagle batter.

The Lakers will return play two more games against Kirkwood Community College tomorrow, March 22nd, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Due to field conditions, the game times have been pushed back to 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
