Lakers Honor Sophomores with a Win

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team split against Division I Southwestern Community College. The Lakers lost game one 8-1 and then won game two 13-5 in five innings. The Lakers are now 31-17 overall and 11-13 in conference.

GAME 1: 8 (SWCC), 1 (ILCC)

The Lakers did not have much offense in game one, scoring one run on a solo homerun from MacKenna Jones.

The Spartans scored their first runs in the top of the fourth on a single, walk and homerun. They scored their final five runs in the top of the sixth on three singles, a homerun, and a Laker error.

MacKenna Jones suffered the loss for the Lakers, allowing eight runs, four earned, on nine hits and two walks, while striking out five. MacKenna Jones and Bryn Bohmann were each 2-3 at the plate. Baylee O'Donnell added on hit for the Lakers.

GAME 2: 13 (ILCC), 5 (SWCC) 5 innings

Game two was a different story for the Lakers offense. They scored thirteen runs on sixteen hits in five innings.

Southwestern got on the board first, scoring one in the first inning. The leadoff batter reached on a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Southwestern executed a sacrifice bunt, followed by a sacrifice fly to score their run. Iowa Lakes did not stay down for long. Alyssa Thorson doubled on the first pitch to get things started. Bryn Bohmann followed with a walk and then Jones singled to score Thorson and advance Bohmann to third. Paige Grafton followed with a groundout to second to score Bohmann and give the Lakers their first lead of the game. With Jones now on third, Karisa Hernandez singled to make the score 3-1. Baylee O'Donnell hit the Lakers fourth hit of the inning to put runners at first and second. It did not matter where the runners were though, as Jayda Staige delivered a homerun to put the Lakers up 6-1. That homerun was the Lakers 78th of the season, breaking the Iowa Lakes Softball team's season homerun record that was set last season.

With the Lakers up 6-1, the Spartans drew a two out walk. A single that was followed by a Laker error allowed a run to score. Iowa Lakes got that run back in the bottom half of the inning when Thorson led off the inning with a single. She then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. She then crossed the plate on a groundout off the bat of Bohmann.

The bottom of the third saw the Lakers put up two runs on three hits. Hernandez started off the inning with a single and then scored on a triple from O'Donnell. Olivia Funk then scored O'Donnell on a groundout to the shortstop.

Southwestern put up three runs in the top half of the fourth. This was done on four singles and a Laker error. With the score now 9-5, the Lakers offense needed to get going again. Bohmann led off the inning with a single. Jones, Grafton, Hernandez, and O'Donnell each singled to score two more runs in the inning.

The Lakers needed just one run to end the game early. Kiaya Dunbar reached on a single to start the fifth inning. She then stole second to put herself in scoring position and then came around to end the game on a single from Thorson.

Baylee O'Donnell and Karisa Hernandez were each 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored. Alyssa Thorson was 3-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. MacKenna Jones, Karisa Hernandez, and Jayda Staige each added two hits in the game. Jayda Staige picked up her second win of the week. She pitched four innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits and two walks, while striking out two. Baylee O'Donnell threw one inning allowing zero runs on one hit.

The Lakers will play their final game of the year tomorrow, April 30th, at 12:00 and 2:00 PM. Games will be against Morningside University JV.
