'83-'85 Football

Because of the Criminal Justice Program, Brent decided that Iowa Lakes was the place for him after high school.  It was a bonus to be able to play football for two years as a Laker.

Shatto was a two-time letter winner for football, named first team All-Region during his sophomore season, and awarded with the Spirit and Hustle Award, Outstanding “Hawg” Trophy.  He was also chosen by teammates and coaches to be a co-captain in 1984.

Coach Roger Guge said, “Brent started immediately for us right out of Terril High School, and because the center made most of the line calls, he was a stable force for us for both years.  He proved that you can come from a small high school and step in and play at a higher level, a real credit to Brent."

While at Iowa Lakes, some of his fondest memories include his criminal justice classes with Jerry Larson and Butch Miller, hanging out at places like the 509, the zoo, the castle, and Hasbrook’s trailer court.  Another one of his favorite memories is the movillas.

As a student range officer and a member of the criminal justice club, he has a few Iowa Lakes employees that made an impact on him.   That list includes: Ed Neibauer, Roger Guge, Dr. Robert Hranac, Jim Hall, Pat Hall, and Jerry Larson.

After Iowa Lakes he attended the University of North Dakota on a full scholarship and earned a starting offensive line position his first season.

Brent is currently a Captain on the Estherville Police Department completing his 25th year of service.  He is also the Co-Commander of a multi-jurisdictional Emergency Response Unit called the H.E.A.T. team.  He has active memberships in the Estherville Noon Kiwanis; the 1st Presbyterian Church; the Iowa High School Rodeo with the Estherville Saddle Club; and Wallingford Fire and Rescue. In his spare time he coaches youth wrestling and occasionally helps at KILR Radio broadcasting football and wrestling activities for ELC.

He would like to thank his parents, the late Larry Shatto and Kathy Shatto for their support in his collegiate endeavors, and his wife Tera and children Kelsey, Seth, Kale and Suri.
