Iowa Lakes Takes 2nd at BVU Shootout
Iowa Lakes sent two teams to the BVU Match Play Shootout in Spencer, Iowa this weekend and came up just a bit short with a 2nd place finish, falling in the championship match against Briar Cliff University. The Iowa Lakes JV team ended up taking 3rd, winning their 3rd place match against Buena Vista University.
"Today was a long, cold, and wet day of golf and I think we are glad to be inside and warming up." said Coach Weber after the tournament. "We decided with the conditions that we would not be playing tomorrow and we shortened all of the matches to 9 holes rather than 18 in hopes to get all three matches in today. That puts a lot of pressure on a player when you a playing heads up singles matches, knowing you only have 9 holes to make up any ground if you fall behind right away, but I think the guys did an OK job today with the adjustments."
Both teams flew through their first matches, winning all ten singles matches against Iowa Central Community College and Simpson College. The varisty advanced to contend with Buena Vista and the JV advanced to compete with Briar Cliff in hopes to advance to compete in the championship match. The varsity again won their singles match 5-0 and would advance to the championship match against either Briar Cliff or the Iowa Lakes JV. The JV would end up falling just short, 2-3, in their match against Briar Cliff and would meet up with Buena Vista in teh 3rd place match. Iowa Lakes would square up with Briar Cliff in the championship match. The JV would end up winning their match, 3-2, and take home 3rd place. The varsity came out slow, trailing in all 5 matches, but would crawl their way back in only to come up a bit short in the final match on the last hole and lose 2-3, taking home 2nd.
"The guys all fought hard and each person some some success and some adversity, which is exactly what match play is all about. This is a fun tournament to be a part of, and I would like to think that if we had full 18 hole matches that maybe we would have had a chance to scratch out another team win against Briar Cliff and bring home some hardware. Maybe next time!"
The Iowa Lakes men will look to conclude the fall season by defending their title at the annual Quad Cup on October 21st at Spring Valley Golf Club in Livermore, Iowa.
