Lakers in Contention After First Round

The Iowa Lakes men's golf team is currently four stokes back of the final qualification spot for the national tournament after round one of the Region XI Championship in Ames, Iowa at Veenker Memorial Golf Course. The Lakers posted a round one score of 322, four shots back of both Northeast Community College and Southwestern Community College who both posted team scores of 318. Also in the mix for the last spot is North Iowa Area Community College with a 319 and Hawkeye Community College with a 323. Kirkwood Community College is leading the tournament after day one with a 304 and Des Moines Area Community College is in second with a 310.

"Today was all about getting through round one and being in contention for round two," said Coach Weber. "You can never win a two day event on day one, but you can certainly lose it. The boys did not bring their best game today, but they did just enough to make tomorrow's round meaningful, and that means something. We all knew that this was going to be a very competitive tournament and I don't think anybody is surprised by the team standings. Tomorrow is going to be a great environment and truly an exciting finale to the season."

The Lakers were led by freshman Trace Jacobson with a 78, who sits in tenth place individually and is seven shots back of the leaders. Cameron Maxwell posted 80, Carlton Rahn 81, Morgan Edwards 83, and Aaron James 87.

"Everybody knows what we need to do tomorrow. We were in the exact same position last year, so hopefully they can look back on that round and learn from it and come out firing. I have a sneaky feeling these guys will come out loose and play with confidence and post a score they can be proud of. After all, we have nothing to lose but everything to gain."

Tee times start at 9:00 AM tomorrow morning at Veenker Memorial. The top three teams and the next two individuals will qualify for the NJCAA Division II National Championship at Swan Lake Golf Resort Resort in Plymouth, Indiana May 21st-24th.
