The Iowa Lakes Community College softball team travelled to Ottumwa, Iowa today to take on Division 1 Junior College, Indian Hills. The Lakers dropped game one 9-0 in five innings, before winning a thriller 10-9 in nine innings.

The Lakers could not get much offense going in game one, as they only had two hits in the ballgame. Freshman, Tianna Soto and Autumn Phelps, had the two hits for the Lakers. Annjelica Moreno-Englebrecht took the loss for the Lakers, allowing six runs, three earned, on five hits in 3.2 innings. Isabelle Karr also pitched for the Lakers, allowing three earned runs on three hits.

Game two was a completely different story for the Lakers. They took the early lead, scoring one run in the top of the first. Kacie Salazar and Yasmine Nix both drew two out walks. Freshman, Lexus Gorospe, then hit a line drive to left to score Salazar from first. The Warriors quickly tied the ballgame back up the in bottom of the first, scoring one run on one walk and a double.

The Laker bats were up for a challenge though, as they scored four runs in the top of the second. Mary Kelly hit a one out double before Madisyn Arechederra walked on four straight pitches. Taylor Allen then doubled to left center to score Kelly and advance Arechederra to third. Moreno-Englebrecht then hit a hard ground ball to left field to score Arechederra and put the Lakers up 3-1. Allen quickly followed Arechederra home, when she scored on a wild pitch by the Warriors. Some heads up baserunning brought Moreno-Englebrecht to third base on the wild pitch. Salazar hit the next pitch up to left field to score Moreno-Englebrecht and put the Lakers up 5-1.

The Warriors got one run back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring one run on two hits.

The score remained 5-2 until the Arechederra led off the fourth with a single. Allen then doubled to center to put runners and second and third. Another Warrior wild pitch allowed Arechederra to score and put the Lakers up 6-2.

The Warriors scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a walk and homerun to bring them within two runs.

The score remained 6-4 until the Warriors tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh. A leadoff single for the Warriors started the inning. Gorospe got the next batter to strikeout before allowing a walk and putting runners at first and second. She got the next Warrior batter to groundout to Salazar at short to put the Lakers within one out of winning the ballgame. A line drive off the glove of Lozoya and some aggressive baserunning tied the game up for the Warriors and sent the game to extra innings.

Neither team threatened to score in the eighth inning. Arechederra led off the top of the ninth with a single, but Allen reached on a Warrior error. A heads up play from Indian Hills got Arechederra out attempting to advance to third. With two outs and Allen on second, Salazar hit a hard ground ball down the third base line to score Allen and give the Lakers the lead again. Another two out single from Yasmine Nix scored Salazar from second. A single by Gorospe and Phelps loaded up the bases and brought up pinch hitter, Soto. Soto took the second pitch she saw and drove it back up the middle to score two runners and give the Lakers their final lead of the game.

The Warriors made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth. They led off with a single to left, before hitting back to back homeruns to bring them within one run. Nix then shut down any momentum they had by getting Hollon to ground out to third. Westercamp then flew out to Salazar before the final out of the game flew out to center.

The Lakers were led at the plate by Mary Kelly. She was 3-5 with a double and one run scored.
