Lakers Sweep Marshalltown

 

Iowa Lakes Community College softball team brought their bats Sunday in their sweep over Division 1 Marshalltown Community College. The Lakers put a combined 31 runs in their two games. Yasmine Nix and Annjelica Moreno-Englebrecht each picked up a win for the Lakers. They are now 6-10 on the season and 3-1 since returning from Spring Break.

Marshalltown struck first in the game with a leadoff homerun off the bat of Terrell. Nix got the next three batters out to end the inning.

In the top of the third, Tianna Soto hit a one out single to center to get things started. With two outs, Soto advanced on a wild pitch, before scoring on a Tiger error off the bat of Priscilla Lozoya. Lozoya quickly stole second before advancing to third on a hit from Madisyn Arechederra. Another wild pitch allowed Lozoya to score and put the Lakers up 2-1.

The Lakers put up two more runs in the top of the third. With one out, Kacie Salazar drove a double off the top of the left field fence. Salazar took third on a wild pitch, before Nix drew a walk. Nix then stole second, before both runners scooted across the plate on a Soto hit. With the Lakers up 4-1 in the bottom of the third, Terrell hit another solo shot to bring the Tigers within two.

Marshalltown tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth. Nix allowed a leadoff double and walk to put runners at first and second. A week pop fly to Englebrecht at first was ruled an infield pop fly, which resulted in an immediate out. The runner at second attempted to advance to third, but Moreno-Englebrecht quickly threw across the diamond to Autumn Phelps to record the second out of the inning. Almost out of the inning, Terrell came up to bat and drove her third homerun over the left field fence to tie the game up at fours.

Soto reached on a Tiger error, where she also advanced to second. Laurie Custard then put down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to advance Soto to third. Pinch hitter, Gabby Heckard stepped into the box and drove the fourth pitch she saw over the right center fence to put the Lakers up 6-4. The Lakers tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh with back to back doubles by Nix and Phelps.

Yasmine Nix pitched a complete game, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and three strikeouts. Taylor Allen, Yasmine Nix, and Tianna Soto were all 2-4 at the plate. Gabby Heckard was 1-1 with a homerun and two runs batted in.

The Lakers brought their bats in the night cap, scoring 24 runs on 17 hits. Moreno-Englebrecht started the hot bats with a one out single, before advancing to third on a Salazar double. Nix drew her first walk of the game to load the bases up, before Phelps doubled to score two. Soto quickly followed with a single to right to put the Lakers up 3-0.

In the second inning, Lozoya led off with a walk. She stole second, before advancing to third on a ground out by Arechederra. Allen singled on a hard ground ball up the middle to score Lozoya. Allen stole second before scoring on a double from Salazar. Salazar advanced to third on a passed ball, before Nix drew her second walk of the game. Phelps then singled to left field to score Salazar and advance Nix to third base. Nix then scored on a Tiger passed ball, to put them up 7-0. The Tigers scored one run in the bottom of the second on two hits.

Back to back walks to lead off the fourth and a wild pitch, quickly put Laker runners at second and third. With Nix up to bat, Allen scored on a Marshalltown wild pitch. Nix drew her third walk and stole her third base of the game to put runners at second and third once again. The second wild pitch of the inning allowed Moreno-Englebrecht to score and put the Lakers up 9-1. Phelps was then hit by a pitch, before slow roller off the bat of Soto allowed Nix to score and Phelps to advance to second. Back to back walks from Heckard and Alexi Pallisco brought up Arechederra. Phelps scored on a passed ball, before Arechederra singled to short to put the Lakers up 12-1. A walk from Allen loaded the bases and a single from Moreno-Englebrecht brought in two more Lakers.

Mickelson entered the game to pitch for the Lakers in the bottom of the fourth. She allowed four runs on four hits, two walks, and one hit by pitch. The Tigers again scored in the bottom of the fifth on another Terrell homerun off of Isabelle Karr. In the bottom of the sixth, Marshalltown scored another run on three hits and one walk.

The Lakers put together a ten run two out rally in the top of the seventh. Sierra Gutierrez drew a walk and advanced to third on a Heckard double. She then scored on a passed ball before Arechederra walked. Singles from Allen, Moreno-Englebrecht, Salazar, and Jerica Walters put the Lakers up 19-8. Madeline Cantu then doubled to center to score Salazar and advance Walters to third. Gutierrez drew another walk to bring up Heckard. Heckard doubled to right to score Walters and Cantu, before Pallisco singled to right to score both Gutierrez and Heckard and complete the 24-8 win.

Annjelica Moreno-Englebrecht started and pitched 3 innings for the Lakers. She allowed one earned run on five hits and walked one. Brooklyn Mickelson allowed four earned runs on four hits and walked two. Isabelle Karr pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and walked one. At the plated, the Lakers were led by Annjelica Moreno-Englebrecht. She was 3-4 with three runs batted in, three runs scored, and two walks. Kacie Salazar and Gabby Heckard were each 3-5 with two runs batted in and three runs scored, while Taylor Allen and Autumn Phelps each had two hits in the game.

 The Lakers will be back in action on Tuesday, March 26th, when they take on Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Nebraska.
