NIACC Tops Lakers

Iowa Lakes Community College softball team dropped two games Sunday against North Iowa Area Community College. The Lakers dropped game one 8-5 and game two 15-7. Yasmine Nix took the loss for the Lakers in game one, while Annjelica Moreno-Englebrecht took the loss in game two.

The Trojans jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back. They scored two runs in the top of the first on three consecutive hits.

The Lakers got one run back in the bottom of the third when Taylor Allen tripled and was brought home by an Moreno-Englebrecht single.

NIACC did not take long to score again, as they scored three runs in the top of the fourth. They did this on one walk and three hits. The Trojans tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth on a single and homerun. They scored their final run in the top of the seventh on one hit, a sacrifice fly, and a wild pitch.

The Lakers tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Lexus Gorospe hit a one out double to left. Priscilla Lozoya then took a two out walk to bring up Madisyn Arechederra. She singled to left to score Gorospe and give the Lakers their first run of the inning. Allen then hit a three run homerun to left field to make the score 8-5.

Yasmine Nix pitched five innings. She allowed six earned runs on eight hits and three walks, while striking out three. Isabelle Karr pitched two innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits and one walk, while striking out one. Taylor Allen led the Lakers at the plate, going 2-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Madisyn Arechederra was 2-3 with one run scored and one run batted in.

NIACC again took the lead first in game two. They scored seven runs in the top of the second. Moreno-Englebrecht allowed this on five walks, one single, and one homerun. The Lakers got two runs back in their half of the inning. Lexi Pallisco and Arechederra each took a walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch by the Trojans. Allen then singled to left field to score both runners and make the score 7-2.

The Trojans scored another three runs in the top of the third. The Lakers again worked hard to score a run in their half of the inning. Kacie Salazar, Yasmine Nix, and Gorospe each singled to load up the bases. Laurie Custard then hit behind the runners to score Salazar from third and make the score 10-3.

NIACC scored again in the top of the fifth. Back to back walks and singles, allowed the Trojans to score two runs. The Lakers again followed by scoring runs in the bottom of the fifth. Salazar and Nix led off the inning with singles. Gorospe then grounded out to the pitcher to advance both runners. Custard followed with a single to right center to score both Salazar and Nix.

The Trojans scored their final three runs of the game in the top of the sixth. A single and then a two out double and homerun made the score 15-5 entering the bottom of the sixth.

Pallisco led off the bottom of the sixth with a single to left field. Pallisco was then forced out at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of Arechederra. Allen then hit her second homerun of the day to bring the score to 15-7. Gabby Heckard then followed with a single up the middle before being forced out at second by a Salazar fielder's choice. Nix singled to advance Salazar to second, before she scored on a Gorospe single to left.

Pallisco again got things going for the Lakers in the bottom of the seventh, this time with a leadoff walk. Arechederra singled to put runners at first and second. Allen followed with a single of her own to score Pallisco to make the score 15-9.

Annjelica Moreno-Englebrecht pitched two innings. She allowed eight earned runs on three hits, five walks and one hit by pitch, while striking out one. Brooklyn Mickelson pitched 3.2 innings. She allowed seven runs, six earned on eight hits and three walks, while striking out five. Naomi Tolmachoff allowed zero runs on zero hits, while Lexus Gorospe allowed zero runs on one hit and one walk, while striking out one. Taylor Allen again led the Lakers at the plate, going 4-5 at the plate. She drove in five runs and scored one time. Yasmine Nix was 4-4 with one run scored. Kacie Salazar and Lexus Gorospe each had a two hit game for the Lakers.

The Lakers will take on the Ellsworth Panthers tomorrow, April 1st, at home. The games are set for 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
