Lakers’ Bats Come Alive to Take Two from Red Raiders

Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team put up 58 runs in 12 innings to beat Northwestern College JV. The Lakers defeated the Red Raiders 30-16 and 28-4 in five innings

Game One: ILCC (30)- NWC (16)

The Lakers scored in every inning in game one to propel themselves to a win. Taylor Allen doubled before a two out double from Yasmine Nix scored her. A Laker error and two Red Raider singles tied the ballgame at 1-1 after the first.

Back to back singles from Tianna Soto and Priscilla Lozoya and a walk from Mary Kelly loaded the bases with no outs. Madisyn Arechederra singled to center to score two and put runners at second and third. A walk from Allen loaded the bases, which allowed Annjelica Moreno-Englebrecht to score Arechederra on a sacrifice fly to left field. A two out double from Autumn Phelps bounced off the center fence to put the Lakers up 7-1. Northwestern again scored a run in the bottom of the second off a solo homerun.

Lozoya got things going for the Lakers in the third with a beautiful bunt down the first base line. Kelly and Arechedera both walked to again, load the bases. Gorospe singled and Moreno-Englebrecht tripled to put three more runs on the scoreboard. Northwestern scored five runs in the bottom of the third on six hits and a hit batter.

Iowa Lakes again scored in their half of the inning. Soto singled and Lozoya walked before Kelly hit a single up the middle to score Soto. Kelly then stole second base before a passed ball scored Lozoya from third and put the Lakers up 12-7. The Red Raiders took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on one hit, one walk, three hit batters, and two Laker errors.

The Lakers tied the game back up at 13-13 when Allen led off with a double and scored on a Moreno-Englebrecht single. Isabelle Karr held the Red Raiders scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, forcing three ground outs.

Iowa Lakes used their speed to retake the lead in the top of the sixth. Lozoya led off with a walk and then stole two bases. Kelly walked and stole second to bring up Arechederra. She laid down a bunt, that Lozoya quickly scampered home on. Gorospe then hit into a fielder's choice, but both runners advanced to second and third. Allen then grounded out to the shortstop, which allowed Arechederra to score and put the Lakers up 15-13. Northwestern cut the lead to one in their half of the inning on a hit batter and a ground out.

The Laker bats continued to roll on the top of the seventh. Yasmine Nix led off with a single to left. Gabriella Heckard then pinch ran for her and stole second base. Taylor Beane singled up the middle to score Heckard and put the Lakers up 16-14. Lozoya followed with a triple to right center before Kelly and Arechederra both singled to make the score 18-14. Gorospe tripled to score both Kelly and Arechederra before Allen walked to put runners on the corners. Singles by Moreno-Englebrecht, Heckard, Madeline Cantu and Beane put the Lakers up 24-14 with runners on the corners. With two outs, Alexi Pallisco and Arechederra both singled make the score 26-14. Gorospe was hit by a pitch to load the bases, before an Allen double scored two more for the Lakers. Moreno-Englebrecht drove in the final two runs of the game on a single to left field. The Red Raiders put up two in the bottom of the seventh on three hits and a ground out.

Isabelle Karr picked up the win for the Lakers, allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits, one walk, and two hit batters. Brooklyn Mickelson allowed nine runs, eight earned, on seven hits and three hit batters. Yasmine Nix allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits. Madisyn Arechederra was 4-4 with four runs scored, four runs batted in and two walks. Priscilla Lozoya was 3-3 with five runs scored, one run batted in, two walks, and four stolen bases. Annjelica Moreno-Englebrecht was 4-7 with eight runs batted in, while Taylor Allen had three doubles and six runs scored.

Game Two: ILCC (28)- NWC (4)- Five Innings

 The Lakers put up 28 runs on 27 hits and had 16 players with at least one hit in game two.

Allen started things off by reaching first on a dropped third strike. Moreno-Englebrecht drove a ball down the right field line and used her speed to get a triple. A single from Nix and a homerun from Phelps quickly put the Lakers up 4-0.

A leadoff double from Arechederra got this rolling in the second inning. Gorospe walked before both runners scored on a shot to center field from Allen. Allen advanced to third on a ground out from Moreno-Englebrecht before scoring on another Nix single. Nix then stole second, and Phelps singled to put runners at first and second. Back to back doubles from Lozoya and Kelly three runners. Arechederra and Gorospe each singled to make the score after one and a half innings 11-0.

Northwestern put up one run in the bottom of the third on one Laker error and a double.

Three straight walks to leadoff the fourth loaded the bases for the Lakers. The Raiders got the next two batters out to bring up Kacie Salazar. She then drove a ball to right center to score all three runners and advance to third base. Phelps was then hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. A Raider error scored Salazar and allowed Phelps to advance to third. Lozoya and Kelly both singled to put the Lakers up 17-1. The Red Raiders scored three in their half of the inning on four hits and one walk.

Pallisco leadoff the fifth with a double over the centerfielder's head. A Heckard double and Moreno-Englebrecht homerun off the scoreboard put three more runs up on the scoreboard for the Lakers. Salazar then doubled off the top of the fence before scoring on a Sydney Jensen double. A Red Raider error allowed Beane to reach first before Lozoya was hit by a pitch to load up the bases. Soto and Cantu both singled to load the bases and bring up Heckard. She hit the first pitch she saw over the centerfield fence for a grand slam. Salazar then smashed a ball to left center for the final Laker run of the game.

Lexus Gorospe picked up the win for the Lakers. She gave up just one run, zero earned, on one hit and struck out one Red Raider. Naomi Tolmachoff allowed three earned runs on four hits and one walk. Kacie Salazar was 3-3 with a homerun, triple, and double. She drove in three runs and crossed the plate three times herself. Autumn Phelps was also 3-3 with a homerun, three runs scored, and two runs batted in. Gabby Heckard was 2-3 with a grand slam and five runs batted in.

The Lakers travel to Creston, Iowa on Friday, April 19th, to take on Southwestern Community College at 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
