Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team split with Southwestern Community College on Monday night. The Lakers dropped game one 11-9, before winning the night cap 11-3 in 6 innings.
Game One: SWCC (11)- ILCC (9)
The Spartans scored first in game one, on a solo homerun. Lexus Gorospe tied the ballgame up in the bottom of the inning with one swing of the bat.
Southwestern put up three runs in the second on five straight singles. They scored another two runs in the top of the third on a two run homerun.
Taylor Allen led off the bottom of the third with a homerun to left field. Yasmine Nix followed with a single off the fence, before Kacie Salazar drew a walk. Tianna Soto then singled on a ball up the middle to drive in Nix. With two outs, Priscilla Lozoya tied up the game with a three run homerun to center to make the score 6-6.
The Spartans quickly took the lead back on two hits in the fourth. They scored another run in the top of the fifth, to go up 8-6.
The Lakers hit their fourth homerun of the ballgame, when Autumn Phelps drove the ball over the left field fence. The Lakers then put together a two out rally to take the lead. Gorospe doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball. Allen hit an infield single and advanced on a Spartan error. Nix singled to left to score the Lakers final run of the game.
Southwestern got their final three runs of the game in the top of the sixth on five hits and one Laker error.
Annjelica Moreno-Englebrecht took the loss for the Lakers. She allowed five runs, three earned, on nine hits and struck out one. Lexus Gorospe allowed six earned runs on nine hits, two walks, and struck out five. Yasmine Nix led the offensive attack for the Lakers, going 4-5. Autumn Phelps, Taylor Allen, and Lexus Gorospe each had two hits for the Lakers.
Game Two: ILCC (11)- SWCC (3)- 6 Innings
Yasmine Nix pitched lights out for the Lakers in game two and the offense put up 14 hits, to complete the 11-3 six inning win for the Lakers.
Allen singled in the first inning, before Nix hit her first homerun of the game to quickly put the Lakers up 2-0. With two outs, Moreno-Englebrecht singled before scoring on a Phelps double. Laurie Custard then singled up the middle to score Phelps and put the Lakers up 4-0 after the first.
Nix struck out the side in the second inning, before allowing her first hit of the game with two outs in the top of the third. The Spartans scored three runs on a double, single, and homerun to bring them within one run. Nix continued her hot hitting in the bottom of the inning, with her second homerun of the game.
The Spartans were again put down in order by Nix and her defense in the fourth. Priscilla Lozoya led off the bottom half of the inning with a double before using some crafty running to advance herself to third and then score on a passed ball.
The bottom of the fifth saw Nix be intentionally walked to start the inning. Salazar singled to advance Nix, before the bases were loaded on a single from Moreno-Englebrecht. Phelps hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Nix and Gabby Heckard singled down the line to score Salazar and put the Lakers up 8-3.
Again, the Spartans were put down in order in the top of the sixth on two pop outs and a strikeout. Gorospe drew a one out walk, before she was forced out on a fielder's choice off the bat of Allen. Nix then hit her third homerun of the game to put the Lakers up 10-3 with two outs. Salazar followed with a walk, before a Moreno-Englebrecht single and Phelps walk loaded with bases. Needing just one run to end the game, Tianna Soto hit a ball off the fence to score Salazar and complete the win for the Lakers.
Yasmine Nix picked up the win for the Lakers. She allowed three earned runs on four hits, while striking out eleven of the eighteen batters that she faced. Nix was also 3-3 at the plate with three homeruns, five runs batted in, and four runs scored. Annjelica Moreno-Englebrecht was 3-4, while Autumn Phelps was 2-2.
The Lakers will be at home on Saturday, May 4th, at 1:00 and 3:00 PM to take on Kirkwood Community College.
