 Iowa Lakes Softball Finishes Seventh in NJCAA Academics

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball had another great year both on and off the field. The Lakers were recognized with the seventh-highest team GPA in junior college softball programs in the country. This includes Division I, Division II, and Division III junior colleges. The student-athletes compiled a 3.68 team GPA. This is the third year in a row that the Laker Softball team has made the top 20 for team GPA.

In addition, they saw twelve student-athletes named an Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete. To be eligible, the student-athlete must achieve a 3.5 or better cumulative GPA for the 2022-2023 academic year. The student-athletes to receive this award are Brielle Bartelt, Bryn Bohmann, Kiaya Dunbar, Olivia Funk, Madison Goosmann, Paige Grafton, Karisa Hernandez, MacKenna Jones, Baylee O'Donnell, Sydnee Swiggum, Alyssa Thorson, Abby Zahn.

There were also fourteen Iowa Lakes Softball members named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Academic All-Region Teams. To be eligible for the first team, student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.5-4.0. Those named to the ICCAC First Team are Brielle Bartelt, Bryn Bohman, Jadyn Case, Kiaya Dunbar, Olivia Funk, Madison Goosmann, Paige Grafton, Karisa Hernandez, MacKenna Jones, Baylee O'Donnell, Sydnee Swiggum, Alyssa Thorson, and Abby Zahn. To be eligible for the second team, student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.0-3.49. Macy Alderson was the student-athlete that was selected to the ICCAC All-Region Second Team.

Lastly, there were nine athletes chosen to a National Junior College Athletic Association's All-American Academic teams. Athletes that had a GPA of 4.0 were eligible for first-team selection, athletes that had a GPA of 3.8-3.99 were eligible for second-team selection, and athletes that had a GPA of 3.6-3.79 were eligible for third-team selection. The student-athletes that were selected to the NJCAA All-American Academic First Team were Bryn Bohmann, Olivia Funk, and MacKenna Jones. The student-athlete that was selected to the NJCAA All-American Academic Second Team was Paige Grafton. The student-athletes that were selected to the NJCAA All-American Academic Third Team were Brielle Bartelt, Madison Goosmann, Karisa Hernandez, Alyssa Thorson, and Abby Zahn.

It is very difficult to be a student-athlete with many things pulling you in different directions, but these young ladies still were able to make their academics a top priority. These women are a great example of the type of student-athletes that we recruit at Iowa Lakes and they are role models to all young girls that want to play college softball." Commented Coach King
