Lakers Snag Two on Opening Weekend

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team earned two wins in their opening weekend in Rochester. The Lakers combined for 14 hits in their game one 17-0 five inning win over Minnesota North College-Vermillion. They then put up nine runs in the fifth inning to complete their second run rule game of the day. This time with a 11-3 win over Central Lakes College- Brainerd. The Lakers are 2-0 on the season.

GAME 1: 17 (ILCC), 0 (MNCV) 5 innings

The Lakers got things started in the first inning when Abby Burgess led off with a walk. She then stole second and advanced to third on a Myla Murphy single. Murphy then stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Katelyn Hamm followed with a ground ball to the second basemen to score Burgess. With two outs and Murphy still at third, Ally Davis stepped in and roped a ball to the left center gap to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Davis then advanced to third on a pass ball and scored on Taylor Larson's single. Larson then put herself into scoring position and came around to score on an Alexis Cullinane double to left field.

With Larson on the mound, the bottom of the second saw two strikeouts, a single and a groundout to Alayna Leighton. Leighton then led off the bottom half of the inning with a walk, which was quickly followed by Burgess' second walk of the day. Both runners stole before Murphy singled to score Leighton. Hamm then stepped up and blasted a ball over the left field fence for her first career homerun. With the Lakers now up 8-0, Macy Alderson was hit by a pitch and then scored on a Davis two run homerun.

Going into the bottom of the third, the Lakers were leading Vermillion 10-0. Murphy led off the inning with a hit by pitch and then stole second and third. Hamm followed with a walk to bring up Avery Somers. Somers delivered a single up the middle to score Murphy and advance Hamm to third. Somers advanced to second on a ball in the dirt and then both runners came around to score on another Davis double. Larson then helped herself out, by cranking a homerun over the centerfield fence to give the Lakers a 15-0 lead.

Iowa Lakes scored their final two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Hamm drew a one out walk and advanced to second on a two out single from Davis. Larson then doubled to score both and completed the 17-0 victory.

Ally Davis led the way for the Lakers at the plate, going 4-4 with 4 runs scored and 5 runs batted in. Taylor Larson was 3-4, also with 5 runs batted in, while Alexis Cullinane was a perfect 2-2. The Lakers combined for 12 stolen bases and 3 homeruns in the game. Larson got her first career win and shut out for the Lakers in the circle. She threw all five innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 6.

GAME 2: 11 (ILCC), 3 (CLCB)

It was a good old fashioned pitchers' duel, until Central Lakes got on the board first in the top of the third. Jolene struck out the first batter before allowing a single. She followed with another strike out, but then gave up back-to-back doubles to give them the 2-0 lead. Jordahl forced a groundout to Davis at first to end the threat.

The Lakers finally got some momentum in the bottom of the fourth, when Davis drew a one out walk. Alderson then smashed a ball to right field for a homerun to tie the game up.

Central Lakes quickly took the lead back, scoring one run in the top of the fifth on two doubles. The bats started rolling in the bottom half of the inning, as the Lakers sent eleven batters to the plate. Leighton led off the inning with a single, Burgess then walked, and Murphy singled to load the bases. With a full count, Hamm drove a ball over the centerfield fence for the grand slam and the 6-3 lead. With one out, Davis singled and then stole second. Two out doubles off the bats of Alyvia Jensen and Brooklyn Bode gave the Lakers an 8-3 lead. Leighton then hit her second single of the inning to center and score Bode from second. With Leighton on first and Burgess due up for her second at bat of the inning, the Lakers could see their opportunity to end the game early. Burgess took advantage of that, crushing a ball over the centerfield fence to complete the 11-3 five inning win.

Abby Burgess was 2-3 at the plate with one walk and a stolen base, while driving in 2 runs and scoring 2 runs of her own. Alayna Leighton was also 2-3 with 2 runs scored and 1 run batted in. Every Laker in the lineup contributed at least one hit in the win. Jolene Jordahl picked up her first win of the season. She pitched 5 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 6 hits and 4 walks, while striking out 9.

The Lakers will return play on March 1st in Beatrice, Nebraska in a double header against Southeast Community College. Games times are set for 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
