Lakers Sweep Southeast Community College

Iowa Lakes Community College softball earned the sweep over Southeast Community College Saturday due largely to the pitching of newcomers Kelly Drake and Courtney Calkins.

Game one: Iowa Lakes 1, Southeast 0

A leadoff walk to Courtney Calkins in the top of the 2nd led to the lone run scored by the Lakers. Calkins was then forced out on a fielder's choice off the bat of Shelby Davis. A single and then error to right field on a hit from Kelly Drake advanced Davis to third base. Caitlyn Clayton drove Davis in with an RBI single to right field.

Southeast made a threat in the bottom of the sixth inning after a double and a sacrifice bunt got the runner to third base with two outs. Drake got the next batter to ground out to Megan Remund at first to end the threat.

Kelly Drake pitched all seven innings for the Lakers, allowing no runs while giving up just 2 hits and striking out 7. The Lakers were led at the plate by Baylee Bechen and Caitlyn Clayton, who each had two hits.

Game two: Iowa Lakes 3, Southeast 0

With the game still tied at 0 going into the sixth inning, ILCC used the long ball from freshman Shelby Davis to win 3-0.

Brittany Evans started a three-run Lakers sixth inning with a walk. Lauren Hein sacrificed Evans to second, followed by a four pitch walk to Calkins. Shelby Davis used one swing to give the Lakers the lead, hitting her first career homerun for a 3-0 Laker lead. Southeast quickly worked out of the inning retiring the next two batters.

Southeast threatened in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Calkins used her changeup to keep the Storm hitters off balanced. Calkins pitched a shutout, allowing 6 hits while striking out 4.

The Lakers were led at the plate by Shelby Davis who was 2-3 with a homerun, 3 RBIs, and a stolen base. Baylee Bechen also had two hits and a stolen base in game two.

The Lakers will travel to Florida on Saturday to play 10 games before starting conference play at Kirkwood Community College on March 25th.
