ILCC Softball Splits with Ellsworth

Lauren Hein continued her hot hitting, going 4-4 and driving in three runs in the Lakers 10-1 win over Ellsworth Community College. The Lakers then gave up fourteen hits in game two in their 10-3 loss. The Lakers now drop to 19-11 overall and 10-6 in conference.

Game One: ILCC 10, ECC 1

Hein and Caitlyn Clayton combined for seven of the Lakers ten runs batted in during their game one win over Ellsworth Community College.

The Lakers jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, scoring two runs. Hein started with a double and was brought home on a Clayton single. Clayton then stole second to put herself into position to score on a Courtney Calkins single.

Iowa Lakes took advantage of a Panther error in the third inning to put up another four runs to take the lead 6-0. The Panthers put up their lone run in the top of the fourth on a homerun. The Lakers proceeded to score one run in the bottom of the fourth and three in the sixth to force the run rule and win 10-1.

Kelly Drake picked up her eighth win the season, allowing just one run on three hits. Hein led the Lakers going 4-4 with three doubles, three runs scored, and three runs batted in. Baylee Bechen, Courtney Calkins, and Caitlyn Clayton each had two hits in the game.

Game Two: ILCC 3, ECC 10

Iowa Lakes allowed three homeruns in game two to fall to Ellsworth Community College 10-3.

The Panthers jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs on a homerun in the top of the first and then one run in the second. The Lakers tied it up in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs. Courtney Calkins led off with a single, followed by a single from Kelly Drake. Alyson Wendland then pushed a bunt between the pitcher and first baseman to score Calkins. Baylee Bechen followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Drake and Wendland up, before Hein drilled a double to score them both.

Ellsworth would not relinquish as they put up three runs in the top of the third, two in the fifth, and two in the seventh.

Calkins picked up the loss for the Lakers, pitching 4.2 innings. She allowed eight runs on ten hits. Offensively, Hein led the Lakers going 2-4 with two runs batted in. Calkins also had two hits in the game.

The Lakers will play at North Iowa Area Community College Wednesday, April 13th, at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. They will then return home to take on Dakota County Technical College on Thursday, April 14th, at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
