Southwestern CC sweeps ILCC

Iowa Lakes softball dropped two games to Southwestern Community College by scores of 9-8 and 6-1. The Lakers fall to 24-20 overall and 13-15 in conference.

Game One: ILCC 8, SWCC 9

Southwestern Community College came up clutch with a two out, three run, walk off homerun to win game one 9-8.

SWCC took the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. Iowa Lakes worked the score back to even with a Kelly Drake homerun in the third and an RBI single by Megan Remund. Southwestern took the lead back in the fourth, before Iowa Lakes put two run up on the board in the fifth to lead 4-3.

SWCC again took the lead, with two homeruns and a RBI single in the sixth. Iowa Lakes did not go away though, as they rallied four runs in the top of the seventh to take the 8-6 lead. Southwestern was down to their final out with runners on first and second, when Brennan Banks hit her second homerun of the game over the right center fence to win 9-8.

Kelly Drake took the loss for the Lakers, allowing seven earned runs on eleven hits, including three homeruns. ILCC combined for nineteen hits in the game, including three hits from Lauren Hein, Megan Remund, and Baylee Bechen. Kelly Drake and Shelby Davis each had a solo homerun in the game.

Game Two: ILCC 1, SWCC 6

Iowa Lakes could only muster one run on four hits in their game two 6-1 loss to Southwestern Community College.

The score was 0-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, before Southwestern again turned to the long ball to take the lead. With two outs and runners on second and third, Brennan Banks stepped up and hit her third homerun of the day.

The Lakers scored one run in the bottom of the sixth when Lauren Hein led off with a double and came around to score on a Shelby Davis single.

SWCC put up three more runs in the bottom of the sixth on three hits to complete the sweep with a 6-1 win.

Courtney Calkins took the loss for the Lakers, allowing six earned runs on eight hits. Shelby Davis was 1-3 with a run batted in.

The Lakers will open up their regional tournament on Friday, April 29th, at 4 p.m. against Southwestern Community College. The games will be played at Kirkwood Community College.
