Calkins Remains Unbeaten

Courtney Calkins continued her perfect season with a 14-4 win over Rowan College of Burlington County. The Lakers strung together fifteen hits to put up 12 earned runs in game one. Kaitlyn Bowman picked up her first loss of season in game two against Rowan College, 9-5.

Game One: ILCC 14, RCBC 4

Shelby Davis led off the second inning with a single, followed by Courtney Calkins getting hit by a pitch. Blaney Markman then stepped up and hit a line drive double to the right center gap to score Davis and advance Calkins to third. Julia Pfeiffer picked up a RBI and stolen base before Desiree Lopez walked and Julia Sullwold singled in Calkins. Lauren Hein then knocked in two runs on a single up the middle before Rowan College retired the next three batters.

The Lakers tacked on two more runs in the top o f the third highlighted by a Courtney Calkins homerun. The Barons pushed back, scoring one in the bottom of the third to make it a 7-1 ballgame.

The top of the fourth saw the Lakers add three runs. Montanna Popp took the first pitch she saw over the centerfield fence. Deanna Gerrard then walked and stole second before scoring on a Courtney Calkins single. Calkins then advanced to second on a Baron error before stealing third base. Lopez then stepped up and singled to left to score Calkins. In the bottom of the inning, Rowan College scored two runs on four hits.

The final three innings saw the teams go back and forth on homeruns to complete the 14-4 victory for the Lakers.

Courtney Calkins got the win allowing three earned runs on eight hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts. Offensively, Hein batted in five runs on a double and triple. Pfeiffer, Sullwold, Markman, Calkins, and Lopez each had two hits in the game as well.

Game 2: ILCC 5, RCBC 9

Sullwold led off the bottom of the first with a double before scoring on Deanna Gerrard's first hit of the game. After that, the Lakers watched the game slip away and could not recover. Rowan College of Burlington County scored four runs on five hits and one error in the top of the second.

The Lakers showed some life in the third, scoring two runs on a Hein homerun. The Barons did not let the Lakers get too comfortable, as they scored two more runs in the fourth to make it a 6-3 ballgame. Rowan added three more runs with two outs in the top of the sixth to take a 9-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

The Lakers again tried to get something started in the seventh with a Leilani San Pedro single and a Gerrard homerun but the Barons got the next three Lakers to fly out to complete the 9-5 win.

Kaitlyn Bowman picked up her first loss of the season, going six innings. She allowed six earned runs on sixteen hits, one walk, and five strikeouts. Gerrard led the Lakers offensively going 4-4. She had three runs batted in and crossed the plate one time herself. Sullwold and Makman were each 2-4 in the game.

The Lakers will play three games on Thursday, March 16th, to continue their trip in Florida.
