Laker Softball Sweeps ICCAC Athletes of the Week

Iowa Lakes Community College catcher, Deanna Gerrard, and pitcher, Courtney Calkins, were both recognized as last week's ICCAC Athletes of the Week.

Gerrard is a sophomore catcher from Southey, SK, Canada. She is the second Iowa Lakes Softball player to receive this award this year. She was selected for this award based off of her stats during the week of March 20-26. During this time, the Lakers went 4-0, outscoring their opponents 50-23 and moving up to #17 in the NJCAA Softball Rankings.  

During the week, Gerrard batted .714 with a triple and three homeruns. She also had eleven runs batted in with eight runs scored. Defensively, Gerrard has caught 22 of Iowa Lakes' 23 games this year. She came up with a game clinching double play in the 7-6 win over Southwestern this past weekend.

On the season, Gerrard is batting .536 with an on base percentage of .590 and a slugging percentage of 1.043. She has 37 hits, including nine homeruns. Gerrard has caused havoc on the base passes all year, swiping 22 bases. Defensively, Gerrard has 89 putouts, 12 assists, and has caught 4 runners stealing.

Calkins is a sophomore from Osseo, MN. She is the first pitcher to receive ICCAC Pitcher of the Week this year for Iowa Lakes. This season Calkins has started a perfect 10-0 with two saves on the mound. She has allowed just 29 runs on the year, with 24 of them being earned. Calkins has a 2.80 ERA with 46 strikeouts. Offensively, Calkins is batting .362 on the year with 25 hits, including seven doubles and four homeruns.

During the week, Calkins was 2-0 with an 8-5 victory over Northeast Community College and a 12-3 win over Southwestern Community College. She recorded eleven strikeouts to only three walks in twelve innings pitched. Calkins also showed up offensively, hitting a grand clam in the 12-3 win over Southwestern Community College.

The Lakers will again be on the road Thursday, March 30th. They will play at Morningside College at 3:00 and 5:00 PM. They will then have their home openers this weekend. The Lakers will play #9 Des Moines Area Community College Saturday at 1:00 and 3:00 PM and #2 Kirkwood Community College on Sunday at 12:00 and 2:00 PM.
