Strong Offense Leads Lakers to Sweep Over Northwestern JV

Relying on their strong offense, # 16 Iowa Lakes Community College Softball Swept Northwestern JV Thursday night. The Lakers recorded 24 runs on 29 hits in just ten innings to improve to 24-7 overall.

Game One: ILCC 11, Northwestern JV 2

Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the second inning when the Lakers scored two. Shelby Davis led off the inning with a single to right field. Courtney Calkins then singled to right field, before Blaney Markman drove in both runners to put the Lakers up 2-0.

Kazmierski then allowed two runs in the top of the third on three runs. The Lakers fought back in their half of the inning, scoring two runs of their own. This time off Deanna Gerrard's 13th homerun of the season.

Julia Sullwold led off the fourth inning with a single to right field and was brought home by a Lauren Hein homerun. Gerrard followed with a two out triple and crossed the plate on a Davis single to right. Davis' ball was misplayed by the right fielder, allowing her to advance to third base. Calkins then hit a single up the middle to score Davis and put the Lakers up 8-2.

Desiree Lopez and the Lakers took advantage of a Northwestern error to start the fifth inning. Sullwold  followed with a hard ground ball to the shortstop that was also misplayed, which allowed Lopez to advance to second. Montanna Popp then hit a ground ball to the shortstop that forced Sullwold out and advanced Lopez to third. San Pedro followed with a single to center to score Lopez and both Popp and San Pedro advanced on a ground ball from Gerrard. Davis then hit her second RBI of the game to score Popp and complete the 10-2, five inning win.

Kazmierski (10-4) picked up the win for the Lakers. She allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. Calkins was 3-3 with two runs batted in and one run scored. San Pedro was 2-3, while Davis was 2-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.

Game Two: ILCC 13, Northwestern JV 5

Northwestern jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of a couple Lakers miscues.

Iowa Lakes got things going from their first at bat, when Sullwold led off with a single. Northwestern then committed an illegal pitch, advancing Sullwold to second. San Pedro followed with a double down the left field line to score Sullwold. Gerrard hit her second triple of the day scoring San Pedro, before she scored on a single off the bat of Davis. Northwestern got Calkins to ground out, but Davis advanced to second. Markman then singled down the right field line to score Davis and put the Lakers up 4-1.

Sullwold again got things going in the bottom of the second with a single. San Pedro then doubled to score Sullwold and advanced to third on the throw home. Gerrard then hit a ball to the shortstop that allowed San Pedro to score.

Calkins led off the third inning with a double to left field but was thrown out at the plate on a Markman double to right field. Markman eventually scored on a two out double to right center by Julia Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer then scored when the speedy Lopez caused Northwestern to commit an error on her bunt. Sullwold scored Lopez on her single to left field and advanced to second on a fielding error. San Pedro then scored Sullwold on her single up the middle to put the Lakers up 10-1.

Northwestern scored three runs in the top of the fourth to pull within six of the Lakers. The Lakers loaded up the bases with no outs in the fourth, but could only push across two runs on a Popp sacrifice fly and a Sullwold single.

Northwestern scored another run in the top of the fifth to force the Lakers to play the bottom of the fifth. MaKarlie Smith started off the inning, reaching second on a throwing error by the third baseman. Smith advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the final run on a Calkins single up the middle.  

Kaitlyn Bowman picked up her third win of the year. She allowed five runs, two earned, on seven hits. San Pedro was 3-4 in the game with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Davis, Calkins, and Markman all had two hits in the game.

The Lakers will take on #15 Iowa Central on Saturday, April 8th. Game times will be 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
