Lakers Rallies Fall Short

Creston- IA- Iowa Lakes dropped two games against Southwestern Community College. Iowa Lakes battled tough in both games, but fell short in both affairs. The Lakers dropped game one 7-5 and game two 12-11.

Game 1

Southwestern struck first in the bottom of the second inning scoring 5 runs off a few hits and 3 huge errors. Martin Eckard started the game, but could not get any help from the defense. The Lakers scratched a run across in the top of the 3rd inning when Alex Bline hit a single to left field and was later driven in after a walk issued to Jordan Deadwyler. Southwestern answered back quickly putting up two more runs in the bottom of the 4th. The Lakers started to rally as they scored two runs in the top of the 5th inning cutting the Southwestern's lead to 4. Bline roped a double down the left field line and advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch. Mikey Adams was hit by a pitch and advanced second after a thrown away pick-off attempt scoring Bline. Deadwyler smoked a double to left center to drive in Adams and record his 2nd RBI of the game. In the top of the 7th inning, the Lakers rallied across two more runs, but fell short when the closer struck out the last batter of the game. Southwestern won the game 7-5 and handed Iowa Lakes their 8th loss on the season.

Notable pitching performances- Eckard threw 4.0 innings with 6 strikeouts and 3 earned runs. Beau Britton made his debut as a Laker pitching 2 innings of scoreless baseball and striking out 2.   

Game 2

Another slow start for the Lakers, but they scored first in the 2nd inning on Tavan Shahidi's first collegiate home run to left center making it 1-0.  Southwestern responded immediately scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Lakers were down 4-1, but cut Southwestern's led down to one having Spenser Larson lead off with a walk and advancing on a pair of wild pitches. BJ Johnson drove Larson in with a sacrifice fly to left center. Adams reached on an error and later scored after Ashtin Moxey hit a single to left center. Southwestern continued to battle back plating another run in the 3rd and 5 in the 4th giving them a 10-3 lead. The Lakers add one more in the 5th after a lead-off double from Deadwyler and a seeing eye single from Connor Mitchell. Southwestern didn't stop there. The Spartans added 2 more runs in the bottom half of the 5th giving them a 12-4 lead. The rally began for Iowa Lakes in the 6th inning. Larson walked, Johnson singled to right center, Marcus Wohl walked, Adams hit a 2 RBI double to left field, Deadwyler struck out, Ashtin Moxey singled through the middle to drive in 2 runs, Shahidi singled, Mitchell singled and drove Moxey in, Chad Hinkle rolled over into a fielder choice, Larson singled to left center, Johnson singled up the middle, Wohl was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Adams laced a ball down the line that was caught by the third baseman to end the rally making it a one run game 12-11. The Lakers almost had something brewing in the 7th, but couldn't get it going leaving 2 runs on base and giving themselves their 9th loss on the year.      

Pitching in game 2 – Paul Mudrow got the start pitching 3 innings, striking out 3, giving up 5 earned runs, 5 hits, and walking 3. Zach Meyer threw .2 innings allowing 5 earned runs, 4 hits, and one walk. Mitch Ebben entered the game pitching 1.1 innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and striking out one. Joe Fitka threw the last inning retiring all three hitters he faced striking out two of them.

Impacts for the Lakers - BJ Johnson was 4-6 on the day with four singles, two runs, two RBIs, two walks, one sac fly, and one stolen base. Deadwyler was 4-7 with two doubles, two RBIs, one run, and a walk. Shahidi was 4-7 with a homerun, one double, one run, one walk, and one hit by pitch.

The Lakers move to 4-9 on the year and are looking to play next weekend at Iowa Western in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
