#20 Reivers Sweep Lakers

Council Bluffs, IA – The Iowa Lakes baseball team took on the Reivers in another double header on Monday 27 March. The Lakers fell short in both affairs losing game three of the four game series 17-9 and losing game four 8-0. Recaps of the games are below.

Game one

The Reivers started game three the same way they started game one and two, with a bang. Iowa Western put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning off starting pitcher Drew Grubb. In the second inning, Grubb hit a batter to lead off the inning, got two quick outs, walked a hitter, and gave up a two RBI single to right center, giving the Reivers a 5-0 lead. Grubb shut the Reivers bats down in the third inning retiring the side and striking out one. Iowa Lake's offense exploded in the fourth inning putting up seven runs off a passed ball strikeout, two walks, a two RBI single from Chad Hinkle, a RBI single from Grant Becher, a drag bunt single from Spenser Larson, a two RBI single to left center from BJ Johnson, and a two out, 2 RBI double from Tavan Shahidi. The seven run fourth inning gave the Lakers their first lead of the series leading 7-5. The Reivers answered back quickly in the fourth taking back the lead plating four runs on two hits, a walk, and an error. A two out walk and RBI double from the Reivers in the bottom of the fifth added another run to put the Lakers in a hole down 10-5. In the top of the sixth Lakers added two runs on a leadoff single from Johnson and a RBI double from Marcus Wohl over the left fielder's head. Marcus Wohl scored when Mikey Adams hit a ball in the hole and the short stop could not make the play crediting Mikey Adams with a single. With a 10-7 lead, the Reivers came up in the sixth and added seven runs off Laker relievers Paul Mudrow, Mitch Ebben, and Zach Meyer. Four walks, a hit by pitch, a triple, a single, and an error all resulted in the catastrophic inning for the Lakers. The Lakers fell 17-7 in seven inning giving them their twelfth loss of the season.

Game two

The Reivers continued to do what they did best on the weekend and score runs in the first inning. Iowa Western scored three runs on two walks and three singles off starter Martin Eckard. The offense for the Lakers was almost non-existence only having five hits all game from Becher, Hinkle (2), Shahidi, and Bo Lovdahl. Eckard shut down Iowa Western's bats in the second and third inning, but gave up four runs in the fourth off a double, a walk, a passed ball, and five consecutive singles. The last run of the game came from the Reivers in the fifth inning scoring on four walks plating a runner. Martin Eckard threw 3.2 innings with two strikeouts. Joe Fitka threw 1.1 inning giving up one run. Beau Britton was the last of the relievers throwing 1 inning of scoreless baseball.   

Iowa Lakes falls to 6-13 on the year and will be heading into their first conference series this upcoming weekend against Southeastern Community College in Burlington, Iowa.
