Lakers Can't Hold On

Burlington, IA- Iowa Lakes played the second day of double header conference baseball against the Blackhawks of Southeastern Community College. Iowa Lakes rallied and were up late in both games, but could not seal the game falling in both 7-4 and 6-5.

Game One

Iowa Lakes struck first in the second inning scoring one run on a lead-off walk from Chad Hinkle, who later scored after a Connor Mitchell single, a Spenser Larson walk, and a balk from the Blackhawks pitcher. The game was a pitching duel throughout the first four innings, until starter Drew Grubb gave up two runs on a walk and three hits. The Lakers responded quickly in the top of the fifth inning scoring three runs on a walk from BJ Johnson, a single and a stolen base from Bryce Rogokos, a RBI single from Mikey Adams, and a two RBI single from Alex Bline taking the lead 4-2. After facing the first two batter in the sixth inning Drew Grubb was relieved by pitcher Joe Fitka. Fitka's first batter hit a two RBI single down the right field line tying the game up at 4. Fitka struck the next bate rot and allowed another RBI single to allow Southeastern to take the lead 5-4. Mitch Ebben was called to take Fitka's spot on the mound striking out the first batter and then giving up a home run to center field establishing Southeastern's 7-4 victory. Notable performer from game one was, Rogokos who was 2-4 on the day with two singles, two stolen bases, and a run.

Game Two

The pitching duels continued to game two of the day. Martn Eckard started for the Lakers throwing 6 innings and allowing three runs on six hits, and striking out two. The Blackhawks scored first in the first inning on a single and a RBI double. The Lakers answered back scoring a run in the top of the second inning after Tavan Shahidi walked and Hinkle drove him in on a single to right center. Southeastern took the lead in the third after a strikeout, bt an error on the catcher allowed him to reach base and scored on a single later in the inning. Iowa Lakes didn't allow southeastern to keep their lead long, scoring three runs on another Shahidi walk, an Ashtin Moxey RBI triple, and a solo homerun from Mitchell in the fourth inning. Southeastern added one in the fifth scoring after a walk and a RBI single making it 4-3. Moxey scored the fifth and final run for the Lakers after walking and scoring on a Mitchell ground out to second base. Beau Britton came on in relief for the Lakers for the 7th and 8th inning shutting down the Blackhawks and limiting them to one hit. Mitch Ebben came on for the save attempt in the ninth before giving up a run after a two out single, walk, and bloop single up the middle. Lakers offense could not get anything going in the tenth. Zach Meyer was called to the game and walked the first two batters. Meyer struck the third batter of the inning out and allowed a walk-off double to right center handing the Lakers their 17 loss of the season.

Iowa Lakes falls to 6-17 (0-4 ICCAC) on the year. The Lakers are looking ahead to their next games against Sioux Falls JV on Thursday April 6th in Estherville, Iowa.
