'48-'50 Football, Basketball, Baseball

 

George Hess attended Estherville Junior College from ’48-’50, he will be going into the Hall of Fame for football, basketball, and baseball.

After graduating from Estherville H.S., George enlisted in the US Army and was deployed to Korea. After discharge, he enrolled in EJC. He wanted to come back and play ball with his teammates and buddies from high school.

In his freshman year the football team was the only Iowa JUCO to finish with an undefeated season, during the basketball season that same year, George was named first team All-State. As a sophomore, the football team had a one loss season winning the Northwest Iowa Junior College Athletic Conference. He was again named first team All-State in basketball where he set the single game scoring record at the JUCO level with 32.  Averaging 22 points per game.

After his time at Estherville Junior College, George took his career to Iowa State University where he lettered in football, basketball and track. Earning honorable mention All ‘Big Seven’ team in football. Then he went on to play semi-pro ball in Waterloo where he was named captain of the defense.

George moved back to Estherville in 1954 where he taught and coaches for 34 years before retiring in 1988. He coached the 1974 and 1981 golf state champions and was named Lakes Conference Coach of the Year and Northwest Iowa Coach of the Year in 1982.

George’s daughter said that if her father was alive today he would want to thank my mother, for all her support in all of his playing of sports and coaching of sports, and of becoming his biggest fan.
