Darrell Rodger ’54-’56 Football & Basketball

Darrell decided to continue his athletic and academic career at Iowa Lakes Community College because he was a hometown boy. He literally lived right across the street from the college. He also knew that a Junior College would provide him with the best opportunity to play ball and this was something that was high on Darrell’s list when considering colleges.

As a Laker, Darrell found much success. He was 1st Team All-Conference in football and basketball and was also selected to the 2nd Team All-State in basketball. His football team was ranked in the top 20 in the nation and he was elected president of the honor society.

Darrell’s fondest memory of Iowa Lakes came during an alumni football game. He had a good friend by the name of Cecile that was playing center at Iowa Lakes. Darrell had become friends with Cecile during their high school days and was excited to be playing against him. Darrell had never played linebacker before, but on that day decided he wanted to go against his friend Cecile. Cecile snapped the ball and Darrell reached over, grabbed him by the shoulder pads, and tossed him out of the way. After he was out of the way, Darrell proceeded to sack the quarterback. I would say Darrell got the best of Cecile that day.

Darrell was impacted by numerous Iowa Lakes staff members while attending school. These employees include: Political Science Professor, Arvle Parks, Speech Teacher, Lillian Holms, and Coach, George Hess.
