2010 Softball Team

The 2010 softball team finished with a 63-11 record.  The 2010 softball team won the Region XI tournament by defeating Iowa Central to advance to the National Tournament where they placed 3rd.

This team holds 8 out of the 11 records recorded at Iowa Lakes including: games played at 72, wins at 63, hits at 802, runs scored at 582, runs batted in 512, doubles 181, stolen bases 228, batting average at .400. Other impressive stats from this amazing season include: team ERA of 1.15 and opponents’ batting average of .163.

Coach Mike Bosch had this to say about the 2010 Softball Team, “This team accomplished some truly amazing things. A 3rd place national tournament finish, 63 wins, multiple records and All-Americans.  None of these can be accomplished without tremendous character and determination.  The foundation of any team is the character of its members.  These are the things that made them successful as players and these are the things that have made them successful in their careers after athletics. “

Because of their great success on the field, the 2010 softball team had five 1st Team All-Region selections: Ashley (Heiberger) Schmid (Catcher), Maria (Christy) Cabrera (Outfield), Christianne (Christy Ann) Saiz (Sigh ez) (Utility), Adriana (Tabone) Bush (Outfield), Priscilla Quintana  (Designated Player), Julia Nealer (Pitcher), two 2nd Team All-Region selections: Kristen (Heimerl) (Heim er all) Schloer (Show ler) (Infield), and Melissa Lenzi (Outfield), and two honorable mention All-Region selections: Morgan Davis (Outfield), and Julia Rubek (Ru beck) (Infield).

The 2010 softball season was full of memories.

Katie Larson had this to say about the 2010 season: “Bosch always had the best speeches. The best one was while we were playing at the University of Minnesota tournament in the fall. We had played really well on Saturday, but had just laid an egg on Sunday. Bosch started in about who knows what, when all of a sudden he compared us to Spam. We all looked around puzzled, so he started in on a story. He said he never knew what he was going to get from this team. It was like walking into the grocery store and reaching into a paper bag. When you do this, you never know what you are going to get. Are you going to get sucky spam or wonderful prime rib. We could play so well, prime rib, and then turn around and be terrible, spam. From that day on, spam was in our brains. We would literally just say the word Spam and start laughing and someone actually made him a T-shirt that said Spam on it. You just never knew what he was going to say after a game, so you always had to be on your toes.”

Other memorable times from the 2010 season included: road trips on the short bus with Bosch as the bus driver, the national tournament trip, spending time with teammates, and the trip to Florida over spring break.

2010 team member Ashley (Heiberger) Schmid has this to say about the memorable season, “Our 2010 Iowa Lakes softball team had a special bond that is rare to come by.  We were best friends on and off the field.  We grew together as a team, friends, and students.  I strongly believe by being a part of this team, it helped us become who we are today.  Which are strong, confident, and competitive individuals whether it be in our career or daily life.  I feel privileged to have been a Laker and to have met lifelong friends. There are countless great memories. Some which we probably have told our families and lots more that we probably haven’t.  That being said, I am very proud to be an Iowa Lakes Alumni.”

Congratulations to the members of the 2010 Softball Team on being named to the Laker Athletic Hall of Fame.
