Maria (Christy) Cabrera '08-'10

Maria attended Iowa Lakes because she felt that she would be able to get a great education while being able to play and have a chance to improve and move on to play at a higher level.

As a Laker she was very effective earning many accolades. In her Freshman year she earned 1st team all region, 2nd team NFCA All-Ameircan, and 3rd team NJCAA All-American. As impressive as her freshman year was she only got better. As a sophomore she was one of the best junior college softball players in the country. She earned Region XI offensive player of the year, as well as All-Region 1st team, NFCA All-American 1st team, and NJCAA All-American 1st team.

Getting piercings, and tattoo's as a team, morning workouts in the wrestling room, sharing the laundry key are the most important off the field memories for Maria. On the field, she will never forget winning the conference championship against Iowa Central and going to the National Tournament and finishing 3rd in 2010.

Head Coach Mike Bosch had a large impact on Maria. He helped to develop her as a person and player, and eventually a coach as well. She was able to excel at the next level in large part due to things she learned from Coach Bosch.

Other important figures in Maria's time at Iowa Lakes Community College include Head Trainer- Kyle Norris, and her teammates

Members from the Estherville community were important to her. “they continually came and supported our games. We had some devoted fans both years I attended Iowa Lakes"!

After earning her Psychology degree as a Laker, she accepted a full scholarship to Quinnipiac University where she was named player of the week many times. At Quinnipiac she received NEC Offensive Player of the Year and was named to the NEC All Tournament team in 2012.

Currently Maria resides in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she is a sheriff, and assistant softball coach at the University of Sioux Falls.

She would like to thank her parents and family for their support throughout her athletic and acedmic career. She goes on to say that "I especially want to thank my mother, Anna Galindo, for her conditional love and support. I couldn’t have done it without her."

Congratulations Maria (Christy) Cabreba on being named to the Laker Hall of Fame.
