Troy Larson '91-'93

Troy Larson attended Iowa Lakes Community College from 1991-1993, he is going into the Hall of Fame for Basketball.

Troy’s fondest memories at Iowa Lakes show his dedication to his team and the game of basketball. An interesting fond memory is running mount mother for fall conditioning. Others include the constant bantering of teammates and ultra competitive group of guys, playing basketball at an extremely quick pace, and being a tougher, stronger, smarter, more well-coached team night after night. A highlight was playing in two regional championship games, district games, and the national tournament where they finished in second place.

Coach Bob Grems is at the top of the list of people who impacted Troy while at Iowa Lakes. Troy said of Coach Grems, "He has forgotten more about the game of basketball than I will ever know."  Coach Grems and his opinion of the Iowa Lakes program is still very important to Troy. Troy also appreciates the great assistants coach Eckenrod and Loy who worked with him. Music professor Carol Ayers, and Professors Harms, Dingle, Wimmer, and Schouton also had a big influence on Troy. There were many community members who also impacted Troy during his time at Iowa lakes including Daryl and Sue Madison, Chuck and Sue Tostenson, and John and Carolyn Walz.

Coach Bob Grems had this to say about Troy, Troy came to Iowa Lakes with a great understanding of the game, being a son of a very successful coach. While here he continued to be a student of the game and honing his leadership abilities both on and off the court. I would list Troy as one of my top point guards in my tenure as Iowa Lakes’ coach. In the end Troy epitomized the characteristics of being a student-athlete: great student, great leader, and great player.

Throughout his time at Iowa lakes Troy earned many honors and awards. He was named to the All-Tournament team at the national tournament and MVP at the regional tournament. His sophomore year he was named 1st team All-Region and 1st team NJCAA All-American. Career records include 7th all-time in scoring with 1,054 points and 2nd all-time in assists with 463. He is 6th and 7th for most free throws made in a season with 145 his sophomore year and 142 his freshman year. He is 5th all-time in single season free throw percentage at 82.1% and 4th  highest for assists in one game at 15.

After graduating from Iowa Lakes with and associate of arts degree with an emphasis in business, Troy continued his athletic and academic career at NCAA Division 2 Morningside College.

Troy has returned to Iowa Lakes and now serves as the athletic director, housing director, and head men's basketball coach. His original decision to attend Iowa Lakes was the best he ever made. He loves what it stands for and how it helped him mature in every way.

Troy would like to thank his wife Angela. She is his rock and has been there with him and for him since high school. He couldn't be successful without her. He would also like to thank his children, Taylor, William, and Owen, as well as his mother, Richelle, his mother in law, Nancy, and his late father, Ron.

Congratulations Troy Larson on being inducted into the Iowa Lakes Hall of Fame.
