Tom Thompson

Tom Thompson attended Iowa Lakes Community College from 2006-2008 and is being inducted into the Hall of Fame for Men’s Golf.

Tom chose to attend Iowa Lakes because he wanted to be a collegiate athlete.  While going on several college visits, Coach Dan Soper and Iowa Lakes stuck out above the rest. Tom stated that Coach cared about him as a person first and foremost and golf came second.

Coach Dan Soper had this to say about Tom, “During Tom’s time at Iowa Lakes he played on two very good teams, and he was an integral part of those teams’ success.”  Tom is what we refer to in the golf world as a grinder, someone who competes until the last putt is made and finds a way to come out on top. He is in rare company as a 2-time National Qualifier and has a will to win that served him well in golf and in life.”

“Tom would be the first to tell you it isn’t always pretty, but he just had an uncanny way of getting it done. It was players & people like Tom who made Iowa Lakes Golf very successful during my tenure. Tom is a great example of the type of player and person I wanted to represent Iowa Lakes and our program.”

Tom has many fond memories from his time at Iowa Lakes.  He will always remember all the golf trips over the two years. They had good teams and had a lot of fun while playing. Tom feels that former Lakers would agree with him that the spring break trips to Arkansas were always a great time.  Playing at the NJCAA National tournaments in Alabama and Arizona will never be forgotten. It was amazing to play on some of the best courses against some of the best golfers in the country.

While at Iowa Lakes, Tom’s 18-hole average was 75 and was a 2-time ICCAC All Region golfer and was a 2-time National Qualifier. Tom was a part of the team that finished 20th at the NJCAA National Tournament. He finished 54th individually.   Tom earned his Associate of Arts Degree and continued his athletic and academic career at the University of Sioux Falls where he wrestled and golfed for the Cougars. Tom earned GPAC golfer of the week his senior year.

Tom currently works as a Superintendent at the Sloan Golf Course. In the winter months, he is an At-Risk Coordinator, Head Wrestling Coach and Boys Golf Coach at Westwood High School.

Tom would like to thank his parents, Bill and Vicki, for taking him all over the country to get better at the sports he loved.  And Coach Dan Soper for being there for him and every single golfer and becoming a lifelong friend and supporter.

Congratulations Tom Thompson on being inducted into the Iowa Lakes Hall of Fame.
